Alice is at the old park, alone. She’s spent the last of her money on a cake. It’s for her birthday.
As Alice clutches to the remnants of her childhood, I try to decide what to do with this cake, and this birthday. Should I let the day pass unceremoniously, as I have with Alice and Kev’s previous birthdays? Should she celebrate now, alone, in the early hours of the morning? Should she wait for Kev to wander home, and try to use the event as an opportunity for bonding?
Our eventual answer involves a phonecall at dawn.
And then a trip to the pavilion in the centre of town. She’s sharing her birthday with Zedadias, and no-one else. She blows out the candles quickly, before anyone can walk by and feign interest in her life in order to get a slice of her cake.
Alice has grown to become a young adult. The education system now abandons her to the world, and she won’t be getting any more free meals from there.
But at least her clothes still fit.

All jobs that take place during lunch feed you. Around 1:00 my Sim’s hunger meter fills up. I don’t know if jobs that take place at dinner time do, but I’d imagine so.
Dude I think you can get free meals if you visit the gym.
Every job offers free meals; the only difference is the time. For the more standard jobs (9-5 variety, Buisiness is an example), it begins around 11, and goes until about 2. For Evening jobs, it begins more around 5. For the Criminal career, it starts at midnight, generally, and Journalism goes from 10-whenever you get off, as you progress further (You get off at noon at the final promotion.) Even part-time jobs offer some food, but you should have really eaten something by 3PM. So, assuming that Alice keeps her part-time job or gets a “real” one, she will still get free food. She just won’t get free breakfast/lunch from school, and yes, you can get breakfast if you get there early.
And for the record, she couldn’t arrest Kev unless he tried to break in… which he won’t, or, more precisely, can’t, as only two CPU-controlled sims per town can actually break in at night. Gaining control of this sim will probably just eliminate his original purpose. And even if you are a cop, you can’t arrest people from just being in the criminal career. Trust me, I’ve tried…
I second that. At least there is no more curfew and now she, if nothing else, could possible start a garden, at least til she could save enough money to move away from Kev……..or possibly suck up to “Z” and move in with him…..hmmmmm

It’s the story that’s real, not the characters. People are allowed to get caught up in characters. The fact that this particular story mirrors the real lives of so many is why it grabs you even more.

What a poignant entry; her hopeful expression in the second pic is truly touching. She’s blossomed into quite the lovely young woman, and I hope her life’s much less miserable from now on.

so, (maybe this is obvious to most but I don’t have the game) how did her schoolwork and the other stuff she did/didn’t get to affect her stats as an adult? Or didn’t they affect her at all?
*sigh* can’t believe I feel so moved over a computer program. I feel so bad for Alice. The pictures are heart-breaking of this poor avatar dreaming for something better.
Makes me want to insert myself in to the program and start making things better for her. Alice happens across a lottery ticket worth $1.3 million, Kev goes to jail for 24 months over a lewd and lascivious charge, and get’s mental counseling while in there.
I guess just Alice getting some friends that take care of her would be more then enough.
Same reason we’re all moved by any other fictional character…we feel a human connection. People may feel sympathy for her because they have had difficult periods in their own lives, or they may feel sympathy for all innocents who suffer and simply extend it to Alice.
Funny how things meant to entertain us can end up affecting us more deeply.

I have an idea! I do alot of fundraising for my local Eagles fraternity and our biggest moneymaker is flowers. Brecks and Michigan bulb offer really good fundraising opportunities. Perhaps you could slip a brochure to the people you dog-walk for.. People who love animals are typically empathetic.. and giving.

No, she won’t get 20,000 sim. but if you kick her out then switch households, she’ll most likely have a decent house on her own. It happens all the time with my sims
But really, every time I move out some sims they get about 20000 simoleons, how can it be that it doesn’t happen to you, Ryann?
kev could “kick her out” which would mean she wouldn’t need money. When my kids moved out they had $0 to their name but I kicked them out instead of choosing a place to live in and they would end up with way better houses then they grew up in.
I guess they get the money only when you split the family in the “edit town” mode so that Alice appears on the “clipboard”?

Awwww…Alice just looks so *happy* in these pics, especially the first one where she’s just reading quietly at ‘home’, unbothered by Kev for once.
As for what’s going to happen next, I can see it going one of three ways:
1) Either she leaves or Kev kicks her out (after all, he’s doesn’t have that obligation to a minor anymore, and they are Enemies, after all)
2) Things actually get better between them (depends on how much of Kev’s reactions were ‘enemy’ related, and how much of it was *just* the ‘hates kids’) to hit a stable level.
3) Kev sees ‘Young adult girl’, and tries to hit on her.
I think the fact that their family relationship was defined when the characters were created would prevent them from having a romantic relationship. Or am I wrong about that?

that’s just what has happened in my game with kev n alice, he met and somehow married a young blond, impregnated her and then kicked her out for flirting with don lothario haha

i love this blog, its the best i’ve ever read. by the way, could someone please tell me what the green crystal means?
the green crystal(called a “plumbob”) just lets the player know who their currently controlled Sim is. If a player switched the game point-of-view to watch Kev for awhile, you’d see the green symbol over him instead.
the crystal will also change colors depending on the controlled sims mood…green is happy, yellow is bad, but red is really really bad.
This is the happiest I’ve been in a while. The phonecall at dawn picture is becautiful, and Alice is such a pretty young woman. (And, yes, I’m hoping for a romantic interest in Z.)

Sunshine, the green crystal is called a plumbob. It just floats over the active sim’s head to tell you that you’re controlling them. It’s also handy in identifying their mood, deep green is happy, yellow is slightly less, orange is bad, and red is really bad, it’s just a thing in the sims.
Notice the dot over the “i.” 🙂

I’ve been reading this for a while now myself. I still feel a sense of dread with Alice since she was given all of those very bad karma traits.
Hopefully if/when she moves to a real house Robin would consent to “midlife crisis” her as a renewal of hope and destiny and give her traits in which she can succeed with.
In any case, Happy Birthday, Alice. Even with your bad karma I wish you the best and a new beginning hopefully someday without the weight of so much bad karma.

Thanks for sharing this great story! I downloaded Kev and Alice to my game as well. You’ve got to give it a push for them to end up in a similar situation. In my world, they started chatting it up right away. He then shoo’ed her away. But then they played tag and chatted for hours more until they became good friends. Every once in a while during the conversation his dislike of children caused him to shoo her. He talks crazy, but she thinks it’s amusing. All without any intervention on my part.
So, in my world, the two became friends despite his insanity kicking in every few minutes. I now control them a bit more. I feed them by hosting parties with people she’s met. During the parties people always bring food. Problem is, they have no sink in which to wash dishes. So, the lot is littered with plates, horrifying rotting leftovers, and swarms of flies. It’s truly disgusting and nobody ever has fun at their parties. Frankly, I don’t know why guests show up at all.
How bad is it that I find myself caring more about this fictional game character than some of the people I know in real life? 😛
