As much as we love a villain, we should keep in mind that Kevin is insane. He needs help, and in this game, there is no cure or therapy for him (except, I suppose, through a cheat code).
I thought of Kev the other day. I was at a sandwich shop and a man came in talking to himself. He then berated a customer, pointing out her flaws. (He did the real-life equivalent of calling her mother a llama.) Of course, The Sims is fiction. In The Sims, you can speak madness to a freaked-out NPC one moment and then play tag with her child the next moment.
If I remember correctly, Kev can be mean, quick-to-anger, and mentally ill — but he doesn’t have the evil trait. He can’t help who he is.
Actually, if he somehow managed to accumulate 20,000 Lifetime Happiness points to purchase the Mid-Life Crisis Lifetime Reward, he could re-pick his traits and no longer be insane.
Good point. And it would require Robin to direct the story thus. Although based on the misery he continues to endure, it is perhaps not meant to be so ordained.

The only other way I can think of to get sims to scream on demand is by using an debug interacting unlocking core mod.
Well, my sim screamed through their enitre shower once becuase it ws really cold. I was kinda thinking that was a glitch though, becuase usually they just scream for a few “minutes”. But it was still pretty funny…
And they yell when they’re angry about something, i.e. they can’t get where they want to go becuase something’s in the way, they broke something, they found something that was broken. Stuff like that.
Kev does indeed autonomously roar at people while walking around. It scares me.

I think mine died because I was ignoring him entirely – if I’d ever paid him any mind, he may not have been starving, exhausted, and miserable when he decided to go swimming in that rich guy’s pool and drown.
Plus I think many people may be rather hoping Kev dies in their own game, preferring to have Alice live happily ever after in at least some world out there.
You have the option to change the duration of a sim’s life in Sims 3, either short, normal, long or epic.

Well… the whole point of the blog is ‘Alice and Kev’, and almost everything that happens is the Sim’s free will, based on their traits. So if Alice is going to be hurt, verbally or physically, it’s because Kev wants to.

The part about Alice being clean i dont think is true. Look at the fourth picture, her sweater is a deep purple but its fuming green too!!! It’s inappropriate behavior for guests to take showers when they stay at another sims house.. They get 2 seconds in and someone walks in and threatens to make them leave.
I think you’re allowed to take a shower if you’re invited to stay overnight. However, I believe she was too tired to do so and it’s probably too late to do so the next day.

Bit of a boring outcome for Kev’s journey. Was set up to be all epic and then he just… came back. That farm place looked interesting.

I don’t think what kev is thinking is that hes unhappy about alice’s happiness. I think what it is is hes super unhappy and he just saw an enemy of his and this is a good time to let that unhappiness be known.
For a homeless guy, he seems to have more teeth than me. I mean really, I have a full set of teeth and its only now that I’ve noticed that EA gave the sims like 12 extra teeth. Not that that actually matters, just yano.
I’ve been reading this since it started, and reading comments and suggestions. I think its really good! I’ve been a simmer for exactly half my life (8 years) (Meaning I’m 16, not 8) and just wow, I could never see my sims suffer without or be poor. I’m one of those simmers who cheat all their way to the top of the town, download all the mods that are useful to me, and can never make a “traditional house” as such. By traditional I mean like the ones that EA make. I always make them like really big and too spacious. Anyway. Really nice idea and great to know your from the UK.

LOL, I do that, too. I hate seeing my Sims suffer. When I downloaded child Alice and Kev, the first thing I did was force them to be good friends with each other by making Kev do lots of positive interactions with Alice (I didn’t think Kev would respond well to interactions from Alice, otherwise they would be Best Friends in this story by now). I even got him to hug her! Now, Kev would periodically get wishes like “See Alice get Honor Roll,” “See Alice Age Well,” or even “Buy a Dollhouse.” It’s actually kind of cute. Alice now has two completely different Promised wishes: one is to be best friends with Kev, the other is to stop being friends with Kev. I’m not sure which one I want her to do, so I ended up promising both of them and letting the game play out.
Actually, I think the presence of a father figure really helped the Alice in my game, because she had a Lifetime Wish of becoming a Creature-Robot Cross-Breeder only a little bit into the game, coincidentally when I was trying to build up her logic skill. I don’t think this Alice has a Lifetime Wish, probably because she was just trying to survive day to day, and didn’t have the time to think of future ambitions. Or do you get to pick a Lifetime Wish by the time the Sim becomes a young adult?
In another town, I put Alice and Kev in again, made them friends, then made Kev die on purpose. As soon as she saw her father die, Alice got a Lifetime Wish to be a World-Renowned Surgeon. Coincidence? I think not.
Anyway, cool blog. The Sims 3 is definitely a great game.
Actually, I created a family similar to Alice and Kev but different names, and my version of Kev had different traits. Neurotic, Coward, Evil, etc. No lifetime wishes came up when he was being created so I made him without one.
And by the way, I find creating ❤ DREAM HOMES ❤ with me and my crush are muchhhh more fun xD

I believe this town is the town you have to download from the web-site because the first town doesn’t have farm land built into it like Riverview does.

I am sorry, but I think the last few post have been lacking any real substance, its almost like you’re tired and just slapping whatever up there, I was drawn in to the first 25+ posts, but anymore its almost like a chore to read. I really did enjoy it, but not so much anymore. The story needs more.

Is it just me, or has Kev lost weight from his little adventure?
Sorry, but what was the point of all those wasted posts of him just walking around if it only led him back to town with no purpose? Were you just trying to prolong the story? I really enjoy reading this but I thought those blank pointless pictures of him wandering around were boring, but I was going to tolerate them if they led to something interesting. Instead it leads to literally nothing and could have been cut out completely without affecting the story an iota. It was really the waste of the reader’s time to be honest. Everything should always have a point when writing. Imagine a movie even, with just a random scene that lasted 30 minutes of the movie that was pointless. It didn’t show characterization, it didn’t continue the plot, it just simply was there.
I don’t really care if people disagree with me or if people want to flame me for this. It’s constructive criticism. Get over it, you’re not the author. Robin, however, should take this to heart in any future work. Or at the very least explain the motivation behind this waste of time in what was otherwise a good story. (a good author knows when to end things and not just prolong them for the sake of prolonging…)
Well, that would be pointless if it were a PRE-WRITTEN STORY.
However, Alice and Kev is a, for lack of a better term, pretty much real-time continuing story. RoBurky is including everything important that his Sims do.
Kev going on an impromtu round-the-world journey is something that needs to be written down.
And, as we’ve seen before, something exciting and plot advancing can’t come EVERY day for Alice and Kev. Especially not without SEVERE human involvement.
Robin obviously doesn’t leave anything out of the story, and I admire how complete it is. Without at least something like that, it would have been like, “Where’s Kev?” And it also builds suspense. So stop being such an instigator.
I’m amused you compared this ‘pointless’ episode to a movie, Sayaki. Films often have scenes for visual beauty, for atmosphere, for mystery, or pace – i think Kev’s strange aesthetic circular journey fit all those elements. Moreover, I would argue that it showed significant characterisation, deliberate plot delay for dramatic effect, and real craft on the part of the author.
The reason I used a comparison to a film was because I figured many people need a comparison to a media they often frequent. Books, sadly, aren’t one of those medias for most people.
For mystery: this was not mysterious since it had no purpose. It WAS mysterious before but without an actual conclusion to end the mystery (perhaps a reason for his journey?) it’s just lame. If you read a mystery novel you go in expecting the mystery to be solved, your questions answered. In this case the question was: what is Kev doing? the answer is: Absolutely nothing. Wow. That was worth my time.
Visual Beauty: This is a story being told. The game’s atmosphere is property of EA. If I wanted to see screenshots I’d look on their website. I want to read a story with accompanying pictures, not view pictures with no actual use.
Pace: Are you really trying to argue pace? The story is already extremely slow, the useless installments basically made it stand still. If the pace is meant to be non-existent then braaaavo.
I have my doubts Kev even went on that journey out of free will, and if he did an entire chapter depicting his journey it would make more sense than 3(or was it more than 3?) of the same boring thing. It was being purposely drawn out and not for suspense, I’m sure, but rather as filler.
Let’s look at the word suspense, shall we? (using an online source) Pleasurable excitement and anticipation regarding an outcome, such as the ending of a mystery novel. Note the word outcome! You are held in suspense expecting an outcome. There really was no outcome. To be held in suspense for nothing is ridiculous and no one should be applauded for such an effort. But doesn’t everyone like to read a book and be held in suspense, at the edge of your seat waiting for that moment, just to find out there is no moment! (that was sarcasm).
I realize you hero worship Robin, and that’s a perfectly normal human reaction. However it may be best if you understand how the world really works.
1) Not everyone is going to like what you like
2) If they do not like it they may express their dislike ( =O NO WAY!). They may do this by explaining why the disliked it (such as I did) or they may simply say they hated it with no reason. Either way they disliked it and you’ll have to live with it.
3) Your heroes are not perfect. No one is. Just because someone points out a flaw does not mean the flaw isn’t there, it simply means you do not see it (or want to see it).
4) Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, you’re just going to have to live with that fact. You can cry about it but it won’t change it. You can complain and complain to the person who is expressing their opinion, but they’ll still have it. Just as you can say you liked it I can say I hated it =) isn’t freedom of speech grand?

What this Sayaki person doesn’t understand is that no one cares what s/he thinks. We all love the character Kev, and we’re all upset that Alice has gone astray in his absence. We just want to know what he’s going to do to set the situation right once again.
I love how sayaki continually says there was no point to it and no conclusion so it was pointless. Though I cannot say we’ll ever figure out the mystery of the long trip it cannot be said that the answer to the question will never be given to us. He just returned and there is still a conversation full of thought bubbles possible to occur.
As for the rant about opinions I am amazed. For someone who seems to know a lot about the way the world works and freedom of speech you seem to know so little, as you said not everyone likes what you like…therefore you should stop wasting everyones time because the majority of the readers here enjoy what they are reading AND majority rules despite the freedom to say whatever you want. If you don’t like it, stop reading it and go away.
Wow. Really? Robin is using The Sims 3 to document what two sims will freely do, (for the most part), under the circumstances in which they live. If Kev goes on a walkabout to Stonehenge, Robin should probably document that. Kev wasn’t forced to go there.
It’s a freaking experiment. If parts of the experiment become a compelling narrative, then good on the programmers of the game.
So, yah. I disagree with you. Not going to flame you for criticism, but maybe you should realize the point of this blog before you go all creative writing workshop on Robin.

Not complaining about the pointlessness so much as the fact that Robin dragged on said pointlessness. The dragging out of pointlessness is POINTLESS. Don’t try to make absolutely nothing dramatic. Make it absolutely nothing so we can all say “oh Kev you crazy guy you” as opposed to “wow you took 3 days to post THAT?” That’s dragging this out just so they can drag it out. Dramatic tension? I think not. Wanting this to last longer as opposed to ending it and possibly starting a new project? ohhhh yeah.
And yes they are trying to accurately record the events however making the events drag on longer than necessary is ridiculous. Let’s say this was an actual social experiment and the subject stared at a wall for 13 hours straight. The experimenter would not repeat every hour a vivid description if nothing changed. They would say “same” or ” ” (signifying same)Then place a full report at the end of the 13 hours. So if you want to look at it from that point of view it’s still a waste. This Kevin wandering buisness could have been in one installment a “while alice was doing this kev was doing that” sort of thing.
The fact of the matter is Robin is dragging out this story as long as possible. I think it’s ridiculous. I enjoyed the story previously, and how there are charities on here to donate to. It has a good message but there are times when enough is enough. Do it again with different characters in a different neighborhood. Try out an abusive husband. Look at abandonment issues showing what happens to a child whose parents are never home. By dragging this out needlessly I’m seeing a story plummet and being dragged out just for attention. The only reason this would be acceptable is if Robin is scared that once the story is done no one will see the charities to donate to. If this is the case drag away but I seriously doubt that’s the reason. But I’m sure now many people will be saying that’s the reason now that I’ve thrown it out there 🙂

I’d like to point out that while it is written as a story the author is really only acting as an observer themself and is merely sharing their experience with us in the way they see it.

By definition, a mystery is “something not understood or beyond understanding.” (and that’s direct from http://www.m-w.com) By that definition, Kev’s journey is a mystery. We don’t understand it, and really, we’re not meant to. It’s not like a mystery in a novel, where there are clues to help unravel and solve it. And there are some mystery stories where the mystery still remains (Agatha Christie’s short story “The Dressmaker’s Doll” would be an example).
In this case, the only way to truly figure out this mystery would be to get inside the head of an insane person (Kev).
What wish did he make to start this journey? Was it simply to take a walk? I can just see it now…”OK Kev. You want to walk? Why don’t you walk…here .”
Was there some opportunity tied to that spot, but by the time Kev got there, it was over? Was that why he screamed when he got there?
In any case, I have no clue. The only one who knows the real story (besides Kev) is Robin…and don’t feel you need to tell. We don’t need to know. Leave it a mystery.
One thing I can surmise though from previous story lines. At some point, Kev probably had the wish to “be mean to Alice” and the fact that he’s tired, smelly, hungry, and that other than the rocks of Sim Henge he hasn’t talked to anything in a while and he doesn’t look like he’s having fun, then I think he’s gone ’round the bend in manner of speaking. I mean, here you are, getting ready to be mean to your daughter and make her upset, and there she is, looking fairly content! How dare she!
I suppose if I were a mean spirited, hot headed, insane guy like Kev, I’d probably be screaming too. I’m just hoping that Alice stands up to him. And, if Kev starts in his verbal beat down, that Zed steps in and gives him a REAL beat down! Take that, old man!

Well, I’m saying Kev’s actions are still a mystery. It could easily be explained later on, perhaps the author just decided to wait; I can imagine several circumstances where that particular decision might be useful, or just lead to interesting writing.
Also, Robin isn’t technically making any money off of this story, so…well, she can post what she damn well pleases. I’ll still check back every day, even if it’s dragging on a bit now. Stop reading if you want, but just quit your whining.
