Optimism

In The Sims 3, your sims will occasionally present you with a ‘wish’. A goal they want to achieve in life. Sometimes it’s something small, like Kev’s common ‘Be mean to Alice’ wish. Sometimes it’s something big. For the longest time, Alice has been wishing to get an A grade at school. But it’s just not been possible.

Then she gets an opportunity. The school has said that students ought to have a part-time job, and if she gets one for herself, her grade will improve.

Alice is now on a mission.

She applies for a job at the supermarket. I don’t know how she managed it with no address to give them, but she’s accepted. She starts tomorrow.

She’ll still need to get her homework done if she wants that high grade. So she asks the first person she meets outside to help her, and miraculously they agree.

With that done, it looks like she might be on track to improve things in her life. If she gets this A grade, her mood will improve, and maybe that will help her tackle her other problems.

For the first time, Alice is feeling optimistic.

    Aw, damn.

You’ve somehow managed to create a serialised storyline on the Sims III with more heart, humour and genuinely sad moments than most the TV shows on air. With constant cliffhangers and intense moments, no less.

    Kudos.

  3. 8 Jackrabbit June 13, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Hooray for Alice! Things are finally looking up. We still need to get rid of Kev somehow though…

  4. 12 Badesumofu June 13, 2009 at 12:35 pm

Great stuff, nice to see things looking up for poor Alice!

This story has really made me want to buy The Sims 3. It seems like it really, really rewards creativity – gives you back what you put in.

  5. 13 Killa-Ewok June 13, 2009 at 1:43 pm

I hope Kev dies in a comical accident.

  6. 14 TomH June 13, 2009 at 2:12 pm

I don’t think Kev should die, really, but it would nice to see Alice succeed and make something of her life, maybe become a top businesswoman… and then, on her lunch break a few years down the line, walk through the park to see her old dad, still asleep on the bench…

  7. 16 Mr_Day June 13, 2009 at 2:13 pm

I just hope it isn’t Alice that kills him, even if it is in a comical way.

  8. 17 Jackrabbit June 13, 2009 at 2:20 pm

    And KICK HIM.

  9. 18 MissDisney June 13, 2009 at 2:23 pm

i have played the sims since 2001 and this is the first time that they seemed like people

i am getting ready to play, and i am excited to interpret their actions like you did

great story, i cant wait to read more

  10. 19 BlazerKnight June 13, 2009 at 2:40 pm

This is a unusually touching piece of storytelling – told with a video game no less, something which most people still consider to be a juvenile pasttime. Found this through comments thread on Pentadact’s blog before he posted about it. Glad about the press and attention you’ve gotten so far, you deserve it! Keep it up, hopefully Kev will finally get it together and become a real dad!

  11. 20 Michael Ragsdale June 13, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Keep in touch with Zed!! So far, to me the hug scene was the best part

  12. 21 Andy June 13, 2009 at 3:04 pm

YAY for Alice. Is it strange that I’ve got my fingers crossed that she gets that A?

  13. 22 zehhh June 13, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Nice. Still heartbreaking to see she’s walking around barefoot though.

  14. 23 ebcharles June 13, 2009 at 3:20 pm

    Robin,

Great blog! But it hits close to home.

My 12-year old daughter loves Sims 3, and has us living in a mansion on a peninsula.

In reality, we may be heading for the park bench too.

    Move over Alice and Kev!

loving the story so far…. makes me love the sims even more 🙂

    • 25 Castrator June 13, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Funny how everyone wants bad things to happen to Kev. He’s not a nice person, but he’s obviously mentally ill, and cannot help himself when he runs about in his pants, and hits people.
If the Sims were a fair world, he would be placed into a safe place where he can’t hurt himself and others, and attempts would be made to ensure he is able to function like a normal person.

Which would probably translate, in-game, into a mid-life crisis turning him into a reasonable person who can learn to love again.
Imagine a touching death-bed apology to an adult Alice. Aah.

Oh, and Rob, come back to Lost.

I have been a professional writer for years and make good money at it. But I cannot write like this. Bravo!

  17. 28 Mary June 13, 2009 at 4:23 pm

This is the coolest blog I’ve seen in a long time. And yes, it’s making me wanna play sims again. I’ve actually started to love your characters.

  18. 29 OctaneHugo June 13, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Oh Lord, I just know this is going to end badly. Poor Alice is going to screw things up again. xD

  19. 30 The Admiral June 13, 2009 at 4:28 pm

“I hope Kev dies in a comical accident.”

Heres my ideas of how that can happen:

    Trampled by hippos
    Smacked to death by women
    Starvation in a public bathroom
His sleeping bech combusting into fire
    Tight Beanie causing Brain Hemmorage
Drowning in a unkown person’ pool

I can keep this up all day.

  20. 31 Sam Schenkman-Moore June 13, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I’m with OctaneHugo, this positive turn fills me with dread.

  21. 32 Amanda June 13, 2009 at 5:24 pm

I downloaded Alice/Kev and moved them into my Sunset Valley. Alice is engaged to one of the Bunch boys and best friends with the mum in that family. Hopefully things will look up.

  22. 33 MissVera June 13, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I just got linked here from the Sims 3 news site.

Absolutely amazing. Really touching story. My eyes teared up a few times. I look forward to reading more.

  23. 34 Rubystone77 June 13, 2009 at 6:12 pm

This is a great story! I’ve always been a fan of the stories that can be created thru the Sims 2 and now 3 but this is by far the best and most in depth that I’ve ever read! Bravo! I can’t wait until your next post.

  24. 35 Karen June 13, 2009 at 6:13 pm

🙂 Glad to see that things are looking up for Alice! Although, I really wish her father went under therapy or anything to become a better father.

  25. 36 Daghain June 13, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Go Alice! Maybe she’ll make it and earn enough to get herself a small apartment somewhere.

  26. 37 Rii June 13, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Hmm. Feels a little too over-the-top at times, though, and I can’t help but feel that all these mentions of “Lifetime Wishes” and pointing out the different features of the game are just plugs for the features of the game.

Then again, if this is Maxis-made, then it’s excellent marketing for the Sims, showing people what, exactly, is possible with TS3.

This isn’t the best writing, not by far, but it’s a cute story and the screenshots are of excellent quality and setup. =)

    • 38 tim June 13, 2009 at 8:49 pm

This is most certainly not Maxis-made. They already have their own sims story site. They even managed to get the “Alice and Kev” name wrong on the small link they’ve posted on their community news list.

Why do people always think that something that turns out to be fun is some kind of conspiracy theory? If you do a little investigation all clues will point you to the other direction.

  27. 39 Nyx June 13, 2009 at 8:01 pm

As with everyone else, there’s naught a bad thing I can say about this. Your story telling is superb.

  28. 40 Melissa June 13, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I just stumbled this, and I’ve been reading through the story.
This is absolutely amazing, and I am definitely hooked.

    Good job. (:

    I need The Sims 3 now. x]

  29. 41 NeoTogo June 13, 2009 at 8:53 pm

I know you’ve heard it countless times before but this is amazing. Ive always wanted to be able to do a story like this one with the Sims, and seeing this, it’s really inspired me. Keep it up 🙂

  30. 42 PS June 13, 2009 at 9:05 pm

I’m still rooting for Kev’s romantic pursuits. GO KEV!

  31. 43 nawaf June 13, 2009 at 9:12 pm

you sure know how to make a fantastic story! from sad –> happy

    keep on going ! 🙂

  32. 44 Angelia June 13, 2009 at 9:22 pm

GAK! Is that the last chapter?! :O( Well, that looks like the lady Kev tried to be romantic with early on. I’m glad she’s kind enough to help a kid in need.

  33. 45 Tracey June 13, 2009 at 9:23 pm

This is fabulous…I can’t wait for updates.

  34. 46 Simwonder June 13, 2009 at 10:04 pm

this really is the best sim story i’ve ever read, keep going. i can’t wait to see how things look up for alice, and i don’t want kev to die, but him to change, like he starts being nice and more like a father to alice

  35. 47 Mortal June 13, 2009 at 11:07 pm

Aw frig, that amazon.com link will be no good in Europe 😦

  36. 48 Charlotte June 13, 2009 at 11:08 pm

I’m hoping Zed and Alice fall in love. They’re perfect together!

  37. 50 Cara Stripp June 13, 2009 at 11:43 pm

    Hey,

Just wanted to say this is a great read. A unique idea and the little stories are great.

I look forward to the next parts of the story …

    major kudos dude

  38. 51 Michael (iTurkeyy) June 14, 2009 at 12:16 am

This is absolutely unbelievable, it is fantastic, well done i say it is wonderful, yet very sad. PLEASE CONTINUE!!! IT IS GREAT!!! :D!

  39. 52 losingself June 14, 2009 at 2:10 am

Well that was really really good… can’t wait for the updates. And thanks for giving people ideas how to play this when there bored (such as me) 🙂

  40. 53 Nadine June 14, 2009 at 3:33 am

Kudos mean something like good work, nice one, giving praise to someone who came up with a good or great idea, giving a point (when tallying a made up scorecard). That may not be the dictionary definition, but it is approximate.

It is also very, very true. This is hits home for many people, in every country. The economy of the worlds seem to be collapsing, and far too many will end up in this boat. It is a great way of using the sims 3, and I envy your writing ability.

    Nadine

  41. 54 Mad Scientist Indywreg June 14, 2009 at 4:45 am

I enjoy your Bin Diver family very much, and I am quite glad that I could put them in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help but have my mad scientist self experiment on the Bin Diver benches. I made one of the benches give a positive moodlet to anyone nearby… but the second one… I… kind of… made go poof.

God, I love the Mad Scientist job.

  42. 55 Eric Richardville June 14, 2009 at 5:47 am

She is on her way up. it looks like her goal just might be obtainable after all.

  43. 56 JoeRDough June 14, 2009 at 6:09 am

Brilliant story so far. The minimalist descriptions are perfect.

How much influence do you have in what your Sims are doing here? Are you just sitting back and letting them go, occasionally directing them to interesting places, or something else?

    • 57 roBurky June 14, 2009 at 10:14 am

It’s a mix. Sims from the active household won’t go to other places without direction, so I have to do that, and Alice won’t try to do things that are inappropriate without my direction either. I’m generally giving them prods to initiate things, then letting them take over for the details.

I’m not differentiating much in the story between whether something was initiated by me or by them. When I give a reason for one of their actions, it’s either why I think their free will chose to do it, or it’s the reason I made them do it.

    OMG NO!

    im hooked D=

  45. 59 Porfyria June 14, 2009 at 7:37 am

A friend told me about this blog and how good it is, and gotta say, I totally agree.

It has inspired me to do more with my Sims 3 than make a nice neat person – I fully plan to go the evil and insane route.

That is, when I get the flipping bug worked out – that one where it crashes to the desktop 😦

  46. 60 Catherine June 14, 2009 at 9:02 am

Oh wow, this is amazing. So touching, so heartbreaking. And an amazing exhibition as to what Sims3 can do.

Can’t wait for the next installment!

  47. 61 andrew June 14, 2009 at 9:15 am

optimism? pah, we all know this will end in yet another crushing defeat. JUST LIKE REAL LIFE GUYS. nothing good ever happens.

  48. 62 Vanilla Sim June 14, 2009 at 9:16 am

Amazing story. I’m loving every page and can’t wait for more. Keep up the good work!

  49. 63 riana June 14, 2009 at 2:56 pm

    NO SHOES!

U know i realize that Alice has no shoes on.

  50. 64 Shimarenda June 15, 2009 at 2:20 pm

    This one made me misty-eyed.

  51. 65 StarriKat June 15, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Hey, isnt the lady in the second to last pic the same woman Kev tried to flirt with when Alice was little?

  52. 66 Jenna June 17, 2009 at 3:25 pm

the girl she’s doing homework with is the girl her dad was hitting on at the start

  53. 67 Sondun2001 June 18, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Lovin it man, keep it up!

  54. 68 Caroline June 19, 2009 at 11:11 pm

It made me smile that the woman outside the supermarket was willing to help a teenager she didn’t even know with her homework. That was very sweet and touching.

  55. 69 Arlo June 20, 2009 at 12:01 am

Why do I feel ominous clouds on the horizon??

  56. 71 Alicia June 25, 2009 at 11:57 am

first person she meets outside to help her – is it that lady with whom her father tried to hook up? (I know my english is quite bad 🙂 )

  57. 72 Fingirl12 June 28, 2009 at 5:49 am

    I LOVE THE SERIES!

but did anybody notice that the same woman that helped Alice is also the woman who Kev was trying to flirt with on “Nobody Loves Kev”?

    haha

    anywho

    AWESOME STORY!! I LOVE IT!!

    xo!

  58. 73 Simlover July 10, 2009 at 9:43 pm

  59. 74 whatwhat July 21, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Best one so far! I love it!

  60. 75 Mr.burk July 22, 2009 at 7:16 pm

did someone else notice that the the girl that'[s helping alice is the first women kev hit on.

  61. 76 cartoonfansparadise August 8, 2009 at 4:12 pm

    YAY ALICE !!

  62. 77 Not a party animal February 18, 2010 at 11:32 am

Hate to be negative Neville but in real life, of course, none of this would happen. In fact Alice would be out of school all the time or a ward of the State by this time. Probably both. Slippery slope to being a toothless addled hag doing very nasty things for her next hit of meth by 18 for poor Alice.

  63. 78 Shanya Almafeta May 9, 2010 at 5:47 am

That third picture – a random stranger offering help – makes me rather happy.

  64. 79 B July 28, 2010 at 10:42 pm

Alice looks exactly like a girl ive been in love with for almost a year now, it makes me feels for this story even more.
