Alice hated her father. After all he’d done to her in his life, that’s not really surprising. But he was still the only family she ever had, so nor is it surprising when his death leaves her an emotional wreck for days.
It will be some time before she finishes mourning, but when she does, I think things will be different for Alice. With Kev no longer periodically dropping by to wreck her self esteem, Alice will have a comparatively stable life. With her new job, she will be earning enough to start saving money, even with her spending on food and her charitable donations. There is still a long hard journey to be made if she wants to own a home of her own. But I think the worst of her life is behind her.
While she’s not quite living happily ever after, I think her future will be brighter but less eventful from here on. I feel it is a fitting place to end the story.
But of course, if you’ve cared for Alice while reading this, there’s no reason for her story to end for you. If you own The Sims 3, I invite you to download her to your game and carry on guiding her towards whatever happiness you think you can find for her.

I am crying right now, that was a good ending, but sad. I love Alica and Kev. Ive never had something, a blog about fictional SIMS touch me so very much. But their is a lot of loose ends, what happens to Z? Etc. Robin, you have made the Sims 3 come alive.

That was a sweet ending. I love the final panel with the hot air balloon and the flock of birds flying. It seems symbolic of something, maybe of the peace Alice can finally have in her life with Kev gone. Maybe just of aspirations and explorations in her life, and hopefully some sort of achievement.
I worry about Alice because she’s poorly educated, she has a lot of healing to do from her upbringing and her chaotic childhood. Will she be attracted to guys who are somewhat abusive and crazy like her father was? Will she crave drama and conflict in her life even as it settles down, so that she tends to seek out less stable situations? I hope not.
It seems unlikely that she ever bonded with anyone as a child, unless it was her teddy bear. That could cause her a lot of problems with relationships in the future. I hope that she’s able to sort through all that, to find some sort of pillar of hope, stability, love, and goodness in her life.
If we, watching this fictional story, feel our hearts go out to Alice, I can only imagine how much our Heavenly Father, watching our very real trials and sorrows, loves us and grieves for us. Or how much joy he takes in our happiness. May Alice feel somehow inside her fictional universe the love of Roburkey, her creator, and of we who mourn and celebrate with her.
I was so happy when she exulted over her promotion. It nearly broke my heart with joy.

Nope. It’s a story. A story with characters which you may not be able to identify with, or relate to, but whom you can feel for. Tatiana was analyzing it just as you would a novel, or a movie, and I don’t see any harm in that.

I understand what you mean, but the blog has to end somewhere. This is the perfect time to end it, even if it doesn’t seem like it. If he ends it right after Alice has kids (if she does) then you would be posting the same thing. Just saying 😀
If it matters any, I did download them, and Alice moved in with Zedadias Wick, married him, and had one son named Felix to represent that she really was lucky in the end. Since both Alice and Zedadias have grown into the Adult stage of life, I got them new clothes that look much like their old ones but are more mature (and in Alice’s case, less ratty). Zedadias is currently a Snitch in the Law Enforcement career and Alice is a Resident in the Medical career.

It’s not often that someone would have the gall to publicly take a pro-homeless, pro-suffering stance, but it’s what I aim to do in this multi-part rich argument.
While the tale of Alice and Kev (just Alice, now – how darkly amusing) may have affected the emotions of some weak readers, my iron-clad limbic system has ignored the faux emotion of the story and passed the logic on. Are any of you in favor of communism? No?
Because if you’re against having a lower class of society, you’re communists! The second one person rises above another person, we get capitalism. Sure, it’s sad that people are homeless, but it’s a necessary evil that’s a result of the computers you’re using, the cushy lives you’re living.
What sick, twisted minds must favor stories such as these, subconsciously realizing my point yet being too inactive and too gutless to even take a pro-communist stance. Poor Alice? Poor you for not being smart enough to realize that your emotions are being subtly played at the hands this “RoBurky”!

Are you kidding? Charity is an anti-socialist conceit, since it relieves the government of its responsibility to look after its people. By giving to charity you are aiding the capitlaist system, not ushering in a communist revolution.

Homelessness is not a necessary evil. Most Western European countries are based on the principles of social democracy, wherein you have elements of socialism within a capitalist framework. In practice that means things like universal healthcare and social housing for those that need it.
There are still homeless people, but it is not a necessary evil. Neither is it a threat to capitalism. Check out the standard of living in Sweden as proof of that.

Just to point out another mistake… You’re not taking a step towards Hitler if you’re taking a step towards communism… in fact you’re taking a step away from it. Fascism (incredibly similar to Nazism) and communism are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Hitler was all about upper class and lower class being entirely separate. 🙂
Thanks for using The Sims 3 so imaginitively to such a great effect. It’s a wonderful, unusual way to have played the game, and not only has it resulted in a genuinely touching story, but also made me question what is really possible within games.

But I can’t wait to have an Alice and Kev of my own…I plan to make a family with a little boy and his single mom that Alice can grown up with, and marry. So she can have at least one friend as a child, more importantly one who understands what it’s like to be homeless.
Kev…I may just let Kev be Kev on a plot fo his own, far away from his daughter. or I might just kill him off the second Alice hits her teen years. >:)
I really can’t wait to play this homeless challenge with the world adventures expansion, because they’ll be tents which would makes things a touch easier for homeless sims everywhere.

I have to be honest and tell I don’t even like The Sims…but this story is a lot more than the liking or not the game itself…it is amazing how such few pictures with the right text (both in amount and in quality) can make you think things over.
Alice and Kev were one of the best stories I’ve ever had the opportunity to read and I’m very glad that you have shared this over to everyone. It is astouning how the story twists and the happines and anger it contains can move so many people.
I believe this only goes to show the amazing texts you have provided us with and my hat is off for you my friend!
Hope you do drop by sometimes to let us know how Alice is doing altough she is just bytes of information contained in your computere we (and I’ll include everyone who reads this blog) really care about her! Aww, I didn’t get first comment,well anyways ignore my childish comment. I really love this blog, I remember a couple days after it started there was a advertisement on the Sims 3 official site, and I checked it out. I’m definitely not sorry I did. It’s a inspirational blog, it’s awkward to say that about virtual characters. In the Sims 3 you get so attached to your characters though, I think it’s because of the trait system. During the month-long hiatus I lost my connection with the characters, so I wasn’t very affected by any of the posts since. I do not mean that in a rude way, it’s just my opinion. Since Kev’s death most people are starting to feel sorry for him, I have since the blog started because I have a step-sibling with schizophrenia and my grandmother was very poor as a child. I know Kev didn’t have a mental- illness, but he had as much of a mental- illness you could have in the Sims 3. Truly inspirational blog in total though roBurky. Congratulations, you deserve it.
He did have a mental illness. He had the Insane trait.
There are no official mental illness’ in Sims 3, insane is just a crazy person. A person can be insane without a mental- illness.

No, it is not my own eye. I used to use a picture of my own eye for avatar pics and icons and such, but it was a very small and low quality image, so I switched to this one when I started to use some websites that asked for much larger avatar images.

A beautiful end, though I must say I find it rather funny, because I downloaded her for my game and just had her and her dad live in the game while I played my family, when I met teen Alice later in the game, she had other traits, more lucky traits actually and her father and her lived in a tiny house…

It has been years since she’d passed by the park. At first she’d avoided it for the pain it brought, but finally it just wasn’t part of her world anymore. Zane held her hand and made his eyes dip and rise as his lips curled in an attempt to make her laugh. It caused her to stifle a giggle which instantly brought a smile to both their faces.
She walked across the park to an old bench. It has seen much better days, and much worse. As she sat down she lifted Zane and put him in her lap. He cuddled against her and held her arm close to him like a pillow and blanket all rolled into one.
“There once was a man Zane, a man named Kevin and he was the meanest, nastiest man you could ever wish to met. But what the man was hiding, what the man kept, was more love then any man could ever wish to hold. He just held it so close and so tight that all that he let go of was the bad stuff. But more then anything, he wanted to share what he was holding with someone special. That someone was his daughter. This is the story of how he learned to let go and how she learned how to see it…”

I would like to answer one of the comments posted here. I do not think it is communist/ fascist to give to charity or to live in a society that helps people out. I live in a country, the UK, where we have decided that most of those people in need should be provided with some sort of accommodation and some money so they can eat and pay basic bills, and have mostly free healthcare. I personally feel we could do more to help and empower people to change their lives, and so I work with homeless young people in part to make a difference.

I loved your blog!!!!! I dont know if i missed it but what is Alice’s five trait? Great job!
When she became an adult, I discovered that I must have accidentally closed the trait window without selecting one when she became a teenager. So I gave her the ‘unlucky’ trait at adulthood, meaning she has ended up with only four traits.
I hate it when that happens. I once got a kid with three traits only LOL!
I was thinking, if I ever download and start a younger version, rather than the young adult Alice I did, or I do the “midlife crisis” thing, I would give Alice “Insane” to see how it played out. I’m aware that sometimes, mental illness is first discovered and diagnosed between ages 18-25. It’s not always inherited though. I have many friends and loved ones with bipolar mood disorder, and I’m told even if both parents have it, the chances of a child inheriting is 1 in 4. I’m not sure what the chances of ADHD are, but my daughter inheritited from her father.
Heck, if I ever give Alice any biological kids, I think I’ll give at least one of them Insane and/ or Inappropriate. She does want to be surrounded by family, but I may adopt a few. I mean, should I REALLY make Alice grow up to be barefoot and pregnant all the time? Send her to fertility clinics? Adopt? Well, it is her wish to be surrounded by family… Do we play Nature vs. Nurture? Or do some of each? Hrm…

I have to agree with what Katie said up top. I have always loved this blog, but it seems that when Roburky got back from the break, it was rushed to the end of what previously had been an incredibly written story. I am disappointed and unmoved by this ending. But thats just one persons opinion.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
I certainly consider my Sims story as art. And when it’s done I am going to try and write a full text version, and people’s reactions to that made me think.
Some people seem to think that Sims stories are somehow “lesser” and aren’t as valid as straight text. And they also seem to be allergic to the idea of using the pictures from the game to help tell the story. And this is people who use the game for their stories, which makes me scratch my head. Why use the game at all if you feel that way about it?
Anyway….I do think that Sims stories are an art form.

I went back and began reading from the very start… through all the heartache, embarrassment, shame, pride, loneliness and misunderstanding experienced by Alice & Kev. And I watched and waited while the story was on hiatus, knowing that it would be well worth the wait. And I was right!

I wish Sims stories could be made into books. This would be a bestseller.
Also, I had no idea how emotionally complicated The Sims could be. Sims were always just those funny little people who talked in nonsense words and threw tantrums when they were hungry. But Alice’s donation of her first paycheck to charity and Kev’s attempt to make amends before he died… This story really made me feel for the little virtual people, which in turn made me feel for all of the people, whether I know them or not, who seem not to matter in my life.
They’re all people.
Even if they are Sims.

This was such a great story! I enjoyed it so much, and read it everyday after I found it that you posted. I really hope you’ll start a new series soon, but you may have a hard time catching people the same way you did with this. Still, I hope you try. But there are people living in all sorts of hard conditions and I would- (not sure how to say this) enjoy reading how you would depict these different situations.

I sat down with my husband once the final entry came out and we read through from start to finish.
Intentionally NOT reading the commentary.
The story is consistent in quality and style from start to finish, and it ends in a well-rounded and natural way.
I would encourage you to turn it into hardcopy and try and publish it as a book, turning the profits partially or totally to charity. The characters are touching and genuine and the pictures are very expressive. I personally would purchase that book and read it to my children when they were pre-teens to encourage conversations about people who are less fortunate or otherwise ‘different’ and to help teach them compassion and thoughtfullness.
I am thrilled that I came here all those months ago, and more at peace with how the whole thing happened now that I’ve gone through the story once more with a focus on the story and not on the several hundred thoughts from random internet people per entry.
Bravo, RoBurky. It was amazing and I will definitely keep an eye for anything from you in the future.

There isn’t a way to share neighborhoods or saved games through The Sims 3 exchange, but uploading the saved game file elsewhere could work.
It should work. People have tried on Mod The Sims 3, but it doesn’t work as well as it does on the Sims 2. 😦

While I enjoyed reading this I find it a little odd that the story was abruptly halted when you announced you could no longer handle the pressure of writing a blog, then decided you could, only to bring us all back for 3 more updates and a finale. The last 3 updates weren’t worth the anticipation that was built up during this time. You should have just ended it there.
That’s kind of what I was attempting to do, but I wanted to do something better than abruptly discontinuing it. After I realised I couldn’t continue the blog in the way that I had been, I started trying to find an ending that would make sense and be satisfying.

Me, I liked Kev. His utter bizarreness and weird passions always made me laugh and he distracted me from the heartbreak that this story is full of. I think Kev is the somewhat evil random corner of a person’s personality. We ALL have a bit of Kev in us, and in some people it’s just more pronounced.
Farewell, Kev. May you bring your weirdness with you to the Great Digital Beyond. We will all miss you.

The hypocrisy is just weird. Seriously, people, you can’t make fun of people and then mourn for them when they die.
Although that would make an interesting Sims experiment. Take one Sim and have a relative make fun of the aforementioned Sim, then see whether or not they mourn.
I tried to make a different version of this on my own Sims 3 game and it failed miserably. So Robin (can I call you Bob?), I appreciate the pictures a lot more now.

this was an amazing story that i had never even thought of trying to do in the sims.

I did download Alice and Kev. In my scenario Kev died while Alice was still a teen (he spent so much time in jail I couldn’t keep him fed – oops).
At the current stage of the story Alice is now also long since dead, having died of old age after achieving her lifetime wish of becoming a world renowned surgeon, and raising twin daughters (she married Trigger Broke from down the street).
Right now Alice’s grand-daughter Maria Alice is raising a son while trying to become a creature-robot cross breeder. Alice’s ghost haunts their house, along with several other expired family members.
Anyone else want to share their Alice and Kev stories?
Wait, you got a lifetime wish of world renowned surgeon? I got a wish of surrounded by family. Maybe we started at different points in life? I was doing young adult Alice.
I downloaded them and Kev promptly died. Apparently he was starving. Then Alice lost her job and ended up dying penniless and utterly alone because all the prospective suitors in town were either fat or snobby. (My fault: I love making Sims get fat.) I’m kind of evil when it comes to Sims, but when I remade them, I had Kev beg for forgiveness and he ended up married to a fat old person. (Again, my fault: see above.)
You have inspired me to finally take a few snaps of my own Sims, carefully controlling the pause button and positioning the camera for the best angles. Editing this must have been time consuming amidst your busy life.
Thank you for taking the time to finish this tale of woe, and of hope.

That was an amazingly delivered story. Sad to see Kev go (as much of an ass as he was, he was a main part of the story). Hope Alice recovers and succeeds in life.
I feel a bit emotionally attached to these characters… And that’s not a common thing for me.
That’s exactly how I feel. How could I be so upset about Kev’s death despite all the horrible things he did? I felt compassion for a freakin’ Sim. This is a first.

I just wanted to say what I did with Alice and Kev in my game.
I downloaded them and played them pretty much the same as you, only Kev keep finding these expensive rocks in the garbage (Who throws away rocks?) so I gave them to Alice to keep safe until she was a young adult and could sell them without sharing the money with Kev. After failing many attempts at falling in love with anyone, I had Kev give up on love… or so I thought.
After Alice grew into a very pretty young lady, Alice kicked him out, claiming she was sick of his ridiculing. She sold those rocks, except for the pinkish ones, those were her favorite color! After selling those rocks she had enough money to build a small house. Just enough room for one Sim. Alice had the wish to raise 5 kids from babies to adults. I had her start by changing her traits (she has Great Kisser, Hopeless Romantic, Excitable, Vegetarian, and Flirty) then I had her become fertile so we could get this done in 2 to 3 pregnancies, or so I hoped.
I had her fall for many guys, but never become their girlfriend or wife… She ended up having 1 baby per pregnancy for the first four, and they were all boys. She decided to do the (tormenting) I’m-gonna-name-all-my-babies-names-that-start-with-the-letter-“blank” and used the letter T. The boy’s names are Thomas, Trent, Topher, and Tobby. All her boys were born with in a few days of each other and all of them had different fathers. One was a rock star, one was an unemployed bum, one was her maid, and one was almost a copy of Kev! (he was a mean, grumpy guy)
When Alice had finally seduced her old Paper boy, she had twins, two girls. She named the girls Tiffannie, and Tessa. By this time I noticed a want pop up for Alice “Congratulate Kev”. It seemed he got married (to someone with commitment issues) I was able to see this through Alice’s Family Tree. I like to think Alice was happy that her dad actually found someone who could put up with all his issues. a few in-game days later and I saw that Kev and his new wife had a baby boy together. Alice finally had a brother, granted he was younger than most of her own children.
So this is where I am at. Alice is going to raise her kids and try to make a living on her own. I just hope none of her children are scared the way she went about obtaining her life time wish. it’s a challenge. I’ve never played as a single mom in the Sims before! I enjoyed the story of Alice and Kev very much. I believe I was referred here by Felicia Day from Twitter when you had about 3 stories done. I was hooked from the start. You did a good job!
Wow, yours was the weirdest story I’ve heard so far! Alice with a half brother, LOL! I have seen in real life, siblings who are about 20 years apart. If the first was born when the parents are 18, who’s to say a 38 year old wouldn’t try? Heck, women can probably go till they’re 45 or so (though they may need some help after 35), but men can go pretty much forever. Eek, 58 year old Kev could give Alice a brother 40 years younger!
I could see Alice looking for love in all the wrong places as well, hoping a baby would give her the love she never had. I could see Alice being happy for her dad, and with her Good trait, she’d try to make up with him.
I have yet to see any sims get married on their own. I had one move out, though I can’t see where the heck he moved to. I’ve searched the neighborhood, and it seems he became a townie.
Hehehe.
Real life story here – just had to share. My mom was 17 when she had her first child. My dad was 21 when he had his first child. They were 36 and 51 when they met and got married. By the time I was born I had 6 older brothers – the youngest 18 years older and the oldest 34 years older. 🙂
Why yes, “You’ve Got Mail” has one of the funniest lines in the world for me! 🙂
I downloaded adult Alice so I could carry on the story. It might have been done for you RoBurky but it wasn’t done for me. I moved her into Sunset Valley and move Zedadias into Sunset Valley too. I made them best friends and after a couple days he was able to propose marriage to her. I made him and they are now living in a huge house. Zed is a spy and Alice is the CEO of a Mega Cooporation. They have 4 kids two twin boys (Aaron and Alex) and twin girls (Abby and Annie). So it turns out Alice is living a pretty good life! It’s almost Alice’s birthday she’ll be an elder soon. Zed is already an elder and is retired.

Yes, I have a personal blog. No, I’m not going to plug my URL here. I just think you have an ability and that you should exercise it, if only a little bit.
I actually downloaded Alice as she “Started her own life.”
I did not donate ALL of her money to charity, and she gained a happy enough mood to start a job at City Hall (don’t ask me how it happened, it just did and i’m happy). She’s on level 6 of her job and is soon to get a husband, Styles. She cleaned out all of the weeds in her spare time, and when she had enough money, she bought a bed. And it only went up from there. She now has a home. It may be small… But it’s what she’s always wanted 🙂
That was a great ending. 😀 I’m certainly going to download her. 🙂 I want to build her a well-deserved future. 🙂

As of right now she decided to join the culinary career rack. Shes only on level 2 but is happy. she has fnally found someone that seems to care for her. But alas he doesnt. Alice is pregnant. the only thing that man wanted was her body. She thought he loved her,, heck she was starving for love but he cant give her any. That was one of the greatest tales ever told. This ought to be published in a BOOK. Using the Sims’ actual reactions to forward the plot was brilliant by the way.
I want to say that i loved your story! It was wonderful. I decided to download adult Alice as well and she is now my favorite sim to play. At first i got her some extra cash by finding and selling rocks around town and built her a small home. Then she eventually met a nice man named Christopher Steel and moved in with him, then married him. Now they have 6 beautiful children, 2 sets of twins (2 boys, 2 girls) and a little girl and a boy, named Keith, Wendy, Kelly, Sarah, Ryan, and Kyle. Oddly enough two of them came out with Grey hair, and 1 with blonde hair, despite both of their parents having brown hair.
Alice decided she wanted to quit her job, so she did, then she wanted to join the Police force, so she did that too. Her and her husband are both police officers now. Kev has a little spot out by Alice’s garden and haunts the house from time to time. He mostly just watches TV and sleeps in his oldest grandson’s bed. Since Alice was doing pretty good for herself i changed her Unlucky and Loser traits to Family Oriented and Green Thumb, since she loves to garden and loves her family. I tried to do what you did and just let her chose her own life and she’s doing great. She will become an Elder in a few days and she has 5 toddlers and a child. Don’t know how she is going to manage, but i’m sure she’ll do fine as she is a terrific mother.
Thank you once again for taking your time to write this story. I have been following it since the near beginning and while i am sad to see it end, i am glad that i am able to continue her story.

While many have shamelessly advertised as we all call it, I’ve started a new story that I believe is very ready for the audience it desires.
It is similar to Alice and Kev, but different in many ways. A single father of two kids, they are homeless technically, but are living in an abandoned garage. Jon ended up on Sunset Valley’s shore with his two children in a deflated life raft. He doesn’t remember anything that lead up to the event, and the situation has caused him and his children to become neurotic, along with a ton of other unhelpful traits.

thanks for the great story, I downloaded Alice and Kev and put them into my town as non playing characters. For a man who disliked children he certainly has been busy producing them with one of the Lin sisters LOL. One of my topics of gossip was my character announcing his engagement and stating “I’m glad its not me.” Gotta love it!

It’s not in the game, I just made it a part of the story. I like to make the sims seem a bit more real in my story, even if that means making something up that isn’t part of the game.

I’ve figured out what was causing the rogue comments floating to the bottom of the list. Turns out, it’s all my fault.
The site is set to only allow comments to three ‘levels’ of replies. So after someone has replied to another comment, and you reply to that reply, nobody else can reply directly to you. Except it doesn’t prevent me from replying through my admin interface, which creates a comment that can’t be displayed where it is supposed to be, so gets shunted to the end. And then any replies to that comment get put in the same limbo.
I’ve deleted the offending replies again, and made a vow to only reply to comments using the normal page instead of my admin interface in future. Apologies to those that got replies deleted.

This story was simply amazing
lovely; you should do another sims 3 story; this was great; it’s inspired me to make my own homeless sims 3 game; quick question; how did you get them to have so little money at the beginning? i’m pretty sure you built a ‘park’ on a vacant lot, but i think you’d have to have used the largest one and spend all their money on plants and such. i’m definitely gonna download alice and see how much of a good life i can give her in my game.
Robin, I would really like to thank you for this story. This might sound sort of odd but whenever I was feeling down in the dumps I went onto this website and read about Alice and Kev. Throughout all of my problems and issues I kept thinking to myself, suck it up Jenna..things could be much worse. There are people out there living this story and I think it’s wonderful that you were able to open the eyes of many people and allow them to connect to this story through a computer game. I really do thank you, and I hope you continue to write other stories as well, you are a very talented writer. I have also decided based on this website to start my own blog, but from sims 2 (personal choice). I wish you much luck and hope in the future. Thank you.

Brilliant story Robin! Thanks for all your hard work and determination to see it through to the end. I downloaded Alice and Kev Bindiver. In my alternate reality Kev is not a nice guy at all. He’s even gone back to a life of crime and got a job as a criminal. He hasn’t got caught by the police yet. In his off-time he’s his usual cranky self, insulting people, making trouble, I have him go around and look in people’s windows, rummage through their bins, then kick them over when he’s done.
Sims wake up the next morning dismayed…that yet again their bins have been dumped and trash strewn all over the yard, and that their neighbors are discovering this too; a chore which usually falls upon the children of the families to clean up.
Poor young Alice is always unhappy and in a terrible mood, much like she was as a child in your story. Kev often verbally abuses her. But she tries to make do with sneaking a picnic lunch, taking a dip in the community pool or gym pool and showering after. But sleep for her is uncomfortable on that old park bench. She has been invited over to friends house after school, but no sleepovers yet.
I have extended game time running too (999 days or whatever it is)), so it should be a good long time for them to play.
Anyways, you get the brilliant credit for making such terrific and dynamic Sims. Well done!
PS: And thanks for your making us all aware of homelessness. It’s even rougher for homeless people in northern climates what with Winter setting in. Imagine not having a home when it’s below 0′ (C or F it’s still freezing!)!

Amazing. I loved reading this story!
I started your story a long while ago and when you took a break it was a sad day. But this ending was beyond any expectations I could have had. It was so wonderfully amazing. I really enjoyed Alice and Kev.
I just discovered this today and it is truly remarkable how well you have managed to reach out and bring attention to this. I won’t go into a huge political speal here but this has opened my eyes (wider, they were never shut) to people like this in the real world and has made me more interested in helping them. It has also inspired me to do something similair, I probably won’t publish mine though because there won’t be as much drama, but I could see how it would be fun to start with a character like Alice but get her to be one of the richest sims in town. Anyway I do plan on trying to help charities in the future. In this country, if you don’t want to be homeless you shouldn’t be (not blaming them, just that I want to make it more aparent that people can make something for themselves, just a little push from charities 🙂
Thank you so much for this great tale. Video Games may not be an art but I think you have proven that they are a medium of artistic talent, which you have in great quantities. I’d love to see a different story played out in the sims.

I am so sad to see Alice go but what a way to end it. Her life should be an example to use all. The way she still found hope and security to be kind to others in spite of all she’d been through. I think what really sells this story is that in many ways it’s so real that it very likely mirrors the life of someone in real life. That being said, to the real-life “Alice and Kev” somewhere out in the world, best of luck to you.

Aww, I had forgotten about this over the summer and now I’ve come back to see it ended… Very sad to see it go, but it really wouldn’t be the same without Kev. I think you made the right decision to leave it here, on an odd but uplifting note. Very fitting.

I loved the ending. Great job! I made up my own epilogue with Alice marrying Zedidiah and having a son named Kev to symbolize her possible forgiveness and to show that she’s moved on with her life.

I love this blog. You did a great job at it. But while everyone tries out Alice for themselves, why don’t you continue your story? I mean, you aren’t really ending your sims here. There’s not way. I’m sure a lot of us would like to see how YOU carry on Alice’s life. Wondering if she ever gets to be with Zed or not, or if she gets her own house, gets married, has kids? I mean, what’s next on your list? I believe many of us would love to know.
I haven’t actually touched Alice’s game since I ended the story. If and when I do play her life further to a significant degree, it’s likely I’ll put up an epilogue post or two.

i suppose that i am a little late getting to the party here, but i felt it would still be appropriate to say that i’ve appreciated the story that you’ve recorded. the experiment itself was rather intriguing, but i really enjoyed the way you presented it. certain sections formulated from wide-shots of the environment, the extreme close-ups and concise comments when suitable. sometimes i feel that i missed much of the action that was left out of the tale, but i assume the extensive editing to have achieved the intended effect much more effectively than if the story had included more information. i do find myself anxious to learn more of alice’s life from here on as only you could tell. the drama unfolds here as if i had turned on the television to catch a finely produced show. very well done, roburky.

Maybe he’ll meet some exotic Chinese lady, or erotic French lady, who will fulfill his wish of being a heartbreaker. Maybe Alice will pick up a culinary career and learn a recipe or two in France. Maybe instead of living in De’Nile (denial), they can visit Egypt, and Kev can die, and be turned into a mummy.

My Alice has found comfort in exploring (via World Adventures). She’s been using her time abroad to discover herself and gain confidence (and she actually likes sleeping in the tents). She’s earned enough to become partner in the bookstore (which funds her trips, along with her job at the Bistro) and she’s developed an affinity for fine & exotic food. Her traits have changed somewhat and she has commitment issues but she’s dating Don Lothario, since she knows he won’t be asking her to commit. Of course her pregnancy is going to interfere with her exploring…

This may just be another overlooked comment and this story may be something of little meaning to some people, who also pass it by without a care, but no matter what some games may offer, there are real people out there just like Alice. Although I may share her name, I am lucky enough to not have to share her story. Theses artifical people have the ability to share life lessons, so try to be kind to others and treat them how you would want them to treat you, with compassion.

When I first read Alice and Kev, I wanted to download them but was leery of adding anything non EA to my game. After talking with some friends, I did. I put them on the little lot near the park where chess tournaments are held. I never once entered their lives though it was very tempting to direct my Sims to interact with them. I continued to observe when suddenly Alice disappeared, taken by the Social Worker I suppose. Kev began to cut through my Sims yard and I followed him to find out why.
Alice was living with the couple next door. When they died she must have asked him to move in, because he did. They left her their money and both she and Kev had nice cars. I’m pretty sure Alice worked at the bookstore. Kev became my Sims boss at the restaurant (WTF!). Things flowed much as they did in the original story, Kev ranted and raved a lot but I saw him berate Alice less and less. After he died I saw something amazing.
Alice walked past my Sims house carrying a toddler. She never married, but her son did and has two children. Yesterday, Alice died and I felt such a loss I had tears in my eyes. Her family still lives next door, but I still feel in awe of the no interference experience. I leave this family alone.
I knit for charity and one of my circles supplies hats and mittens for a homeless shelter. I think of these characters with every item I send. Thank you Ro, for the inspiration.

Oh my gods, I almost never cry about things I see in films or whatever, because I know they’re not real (I have a surprisingly good grip on reality for a crazy person) but this actually brought tears to my eyes. I love the sims games, and it makes me happy that the franchise can be used for a charitable cause.

That’s…I don’t have words. I found this blog today, and finished reading almost one hour latter. Damn, you made me cry you know? When Kev died, I felt my heart a little small, and when I saw Alice with her hand on her chest…I put my hand over my eyes, to contain the tears. Seriously, this was the most touching story I ever read in years. Who thought game characters could carry such weight an emotional deepness? You did a great job, you are very talented.
You are studying game design, don’t you? That’s awesome! I’m in a process to change courses, I’m going for computer sciences, and I have to say, you inspired me a lot more now to do games. I already had this passion and all, but seeing your work really gave me a fuel to do different and cool stuff.

I downloaded Alice and Kev and Zedadias into my game. I love Alice so much and I’ve lead her into a pretty happy home. I’ve been keeping track on my deivnat art if anyone’s interested. It’s not Fantastic, but I think it’s interesting to see all the ways Alice turns out in differt games. In my game her life’s pretty hectic, she has three infants and two toddlers =)

This has to be one of the most engaging Sim stories I have ever read. It made me cry twice and it made me feel sorry for computer people. I never thought it was possible, but you have done it. Great work.

I’m a big fan and avid player of The Sims (1 through 3 with all the expansions and packages) – and I enjoyed this immensely.

Amazing story, I haven’t been touched by a story like that in years. I teared up at the end, so sad :(.
Perhaps the only blog in the world that shows godly ethics for people who burn their Sims. It shows the The Sims game series makes one thing for the Sims that no one else can (other than humans) can have. Emotions. Showing the story in a deep ethical way that being homeless isn’t the end of the world. It shows that we can be hardened by our life-or-death efforts in being homeless. Alice donating to people like herself shows that they aren’t completely doomed and that there’s more dieing people out there that need her money. Kev is the person who boot-camps her to have ethical decisions, even if Kev dosen’t know it. Please, anyone that reads this comment should give grace to the people who made this. This is encouraging me to buy the game and to start a new generation of Alice and Kev (that is, if you don’t want to do another blog.) Thank you for letting me spend 15 mins reading the storys. It made me get more emotional about the main characters and gave me more ideas for The Sims 3. Thank you.
I love this story so much that i downloded Alice and Zedadias. They got married and they got 6 kids, 1 adopted. And she is happy all the time now 😛

The great thing about discovering this when it’s finished is that I get to travel with Alice and Kev through their lives without having to wait more than a second for the next episode.

I got this link off a forum post, absolutely amazing. A picture does paint a thousand words, the storytelling along with the Sims’ expressions was all that was needed to be carried away with the story. I sniffed a few times, and for a blog post about made up characters, that says a lot.

But actually, in this game (unlike real life) it’s not that big deal to be homeless. Game is nearly socialistic – you can get nearly everything for free on community lots, including showering (in gym), education and Internet access (library), athletic training and food (picnic baskets, fruit gathering). Only problem is with beds, but you can just make some friends and couch surf. Or make Sim with Inappropriate trait and couch surf just anyone:)
Although it’s not hard for a homeless Sim to get by in the game, it’s very nearly impossible to get ahead. Even getting a child or teen’s homework done is hard, hard, hard, and forget about raising a toddler well.

I tryed to mate her and that one dude, he and shirley were SOs, she was staying with him still, they hated each other, anita became better friends with alice, eventually that one dud and shirley got married, and shirley told alice to GTFO, so she stayed at anitas, and eventually they got married.

I’m not really one for emotional stuff, but I genuinely cried at this. Well told, well illustrated, and it prompted me to send half my paycheck to a homeless shelter. (Not much, but I can afford to spare it.)

I genuinely feel different about everything I have so far perceived about life. When I was 8 years old my best chance of family passed with my father. I’m now 16 and man I know it’s going to be tough when I’m and adult. I have family to support me but I refuse to even fall back on them for the way I’ve been raised. I have been isolated from them. I wasn’t given love but more like financial support and when that’s gone I’m gonna be similar to Alice when Kev passed. So I am going to pass on your download offer cause I’d rather have no idea how the story ends cause I’m sure this is going to be a best seller when I’m done.
The best blog ive read, so different with so many blogs out there . The best part for mw is when the father wanted to make amends with the daughter, but it was too late , the daughter could not force her self to forgive or at least get closer.

As soon as I get my computer working properly, I am going to start a Legacy with Alice as it’s founder. Starting out alone and poverty stricken to rise up to (hopefully) have a loving family, good job, and large house seems very fitting for this Sim.

I downloaded Alice and followed her on. She is now working up the Food career, on her way to being a chef. In her free time she paints, and fishes. I am trying to get her to save up enough to buy a house, before I make her meet someone and marry 🙂 Loved this blog!

Yes, I have been homeless in my life, more than once, and rather chronic. All I had was my laptop, a little shed behind an abandoned building, and free wifi at the Starbucks where I got hot water for free, and made soup for pretty much every meal. That puny laptop also had Sims on it, and of course, I downloaded Alice & Kev. I also built a homeless shelter of a different sort, and put Alice & Kev along with my self-Sim and others I’ve met along the way. 3 versions of it, original, expansion, store items/ mods. There will be a #4 soon, Barnacle Bay version.

Myself and my friends were upset by being told you must be a Christian to get into a homeless shelter. Or a single mom, abused woman, drug addict, addiction issues, mentally ill, suicidal, on Medicaid, and so on. I once saw a Jewish couple with kids get rejected because they would not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This lot is my response to such things.

No, I’ve visted Toronto a number of times over a 3 year period, seen just as many homeless and poor people there as I did in Chicago. I’ve lived in Phoenix 20 years ago, where they have entire parks filled with tents of homeless people. I would hope that other countries would be different.
Obviously, the groups I have encountered seem to be rather poor representatives of their religions, and charity, being very selective about who they help, and not based on need. It’s not unheard of to find wonderful groups and religions and charities out there, but it seems to be a rare occurrence where I have been.
Meanwhile, been a while since I looked at this thread, but I never forgot Alice and Kev. Still playing different versions of them. Got 2 different stories up here.
I’ve also got a number of low cost lots on the Sims Exchange, more than one of them being homeless shelters, or abandoned buildings where my Sims have decided to squat for a while. Some of them are based on real places I’ve stayed, and I didn’t mention I “lived” there for any amount of time.

In real life, I am STILL homeless with a laptop, still struggling with daily life, waiting on disability, housing, and more. Average wait time for housing is 6-11 months in Chicago, and I’ve been waiting over a year.
You are such an amazing storyteller. The story really got to me, so I tried the homeless challenge on my own. Because it’s such a lifelike situation, I thought of my two characters as real people. And that meant when the teenage daughter died of starvation, I was devastated.
I’ve read the whole tale over a day and it is heart breaking to think that people could have lives like Alice and Kev. RIP Kev, and I feel so sorry for Alice! She even has the same name as me! I hope that one day there will be no homeless people, but there always will…

Just downloaded and tried out this “family” in the new town of Hidden Springs. With the new generations updates etc the first thing alice did was hop on a park bench and pretend she was driving. Almost heartbreaking to watch the little homeless girl pretend like she has something.

I love this story. I must admit I was hoping that it would end with Alice finally living in a home; however, I loved the way it ended. It showsthat even though Alice didn’t get the house, cars and wealth, there is hope for her. I think I’m going to try her out.

I should have been asleep an hour ago, but wanted to read a funny sims story briefly, and I -never- read stuff like that. Then I found this in a blog. I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by something like this.
You have incredible writing talent and the pictures made this. I laughed so much, my heart was breaking, and I could feel the odd jealousy for Zed and his girlfriend. I pitied the crazy dad so much.
I think if anyone who ever worked on this project read this, they would see their efforts have lasting impact. I almost feel like this is the real way to play the game now.

Just finished reading Alice and Kevs story with my girlfriend. She loves the sims but thought this would be silly. She was having a busy day but I insisted on reading her a few panels. All of a sudden it turned into a game of “just one more page”, we read it from beginning to end.
I want to know why Kev was looking after Alice and hadn’t given her up years ago. Did Kev’s wife die in childbirth, sending Kev mad with grief and unable to cope with life but saddled with a child that constantly reminded him of what he’d lost? Did he see her in Alice and so wasn’t able to let go?
For some reason my favorite bit in the story was when Kev went on his journey and right in the middle stops to shout at some rocks.
and yes, I cried a little when Alice gave her first paycheck to charity.
The story was astounding and touching. Both of us kept looking at each other with exasperation and kept saying “but its just a game!” how the hell did it make us care for those 2 so much?

When I got 7 emails in a row yesterday, I thought for sure the page had a spammer. What a joy to find people are still finding this blog and enjoying the story! I’ve been homeless myself in life, so I keep using my self-Sim and meeting the characters from here at the homeless shelters I built for them. I just can’t stop playing these characters. I was wondering which new downloaded world I might play tonight, and which characters. It might be time to see how Alice & Kev fare with the change of the Seasons! Or maybe a Supernatural potion could help them out. Certainly a consignment store! I do have mods, for various after-school activities, so I’d love to see if Alice can get a decent childhood out of it. I suppose I could take Zedadias to Create A Sim, make him younger, and have them go to high school together!

This blog is old, and I remember reading some of it back in 2009. Unfortunately you hadn’t finished the story back then, and I forgot about it. Until I saw it mentioned on a forum, and I remember enjoying and being tocuhed by what little I had read of it. Now it’s 2015, and I read the whole thing in one go. For such a short novel about two game characters, it brought me to tears and filled me with joy. Your way of writing is very touching, and this sims blog was something else.
I will download Alice, and work on building a life for her. Maybe even build a few healthy relationships gradually, after years of abuse. Maybe even fall in love with someone as caring as herself.
Thank you for sharing Alice and Kev’s story, I won’t forget them this time.

Damn man… 7 years on and and this little experiment is still affecting newcomers like me. I’m 35 years old and I’m not ashamed to admit I shed tears – quite a few actually. An emotional roller-coaster that I believe was only enhanced by the afterglow of the considerable quantity of psychedelic amphetamines that faithfully accompanied me on the journey.
I have no doubt you earned that degree in game design. I hope you’re putting it to good use. I would love to see the output from the mind that created this bizarre dystopian experiment in pushing artificial life to its very breaking point, prompting emergent behaviours that I suspect surprised you as much as they did me.
I’ve already made a donation to the Salvation Army and my local homeless shelter. You’re to thank for that. The efforts you made to raise awareness and aid your local shelters were admirable and inspiring examples.
Amazing in so many ways. You give me renewed faith in my fellow man when I’d largely written off our species as a blight on this Earth that would only be rectified by our rapidly approaching extinction. Alas, at this stage that extinction is a foregone conclusion; we simply can’t be trusted with this planet and it’s only logical that it will purge us as it does all invasive and destructive species that threaten it’s carefully balanced processes. But the world will continue to turn, life will continue to thrive and hopefully mother nature will do a better job at subsequent revisions of our deeply flawed and inherently self-destructive species. Until then, it’s nice to be reminded that my misanthropic outlook is a generalisation and doesn’t mean that there aren’t individual acts of selfless kindness and generosity occurring each and every day, somewhere out there.

I’ve never even played the Sims, but I stumbled across a reference to “Alice and Kev” while reading a comment thread on Kotaku and was immediately intrigued.
Came here yesterday, checked it out, finished the story this morning. I’m nearly in tears, but hopeful.
I’m lucky enough to have never been homeless because I have two loving, still-living parents. But I have been depressed and mostly unemployed for the last 8 years, so I really related to Alice’s pain, loneliness, and risk of despair.
I could very easily become homeless if something ever happened to my parents (and something WILL happen to them — they’re getting old), so this story has inspired me to “get my sh*t together” and work to put myself in a position of stability where hopefully, I can one day do things to help out people far less fortunate than me who don’t have homes to which they can always safely go to sleep at night.
Enough about me. This entire story was BRILLIANTLY written. Perfect capture of the screenshots. I can only imagine the amount of time and discipline that was put toward creating this story.
7 years later, thank you again, roBurky, for this beautiful and inspirational story. (And the best way I can thank you, I think, is to aspire to become a little more like Alice, so that one day I can maybe drop that donation to charity in the mailbox.)
