Alice

Alice hated her father. After all he’d done to her in his life, that’s not really surprising. But he was still the only family she ever had, so nor is it surprising when his death leaves her an emotional wreck for days.

It will be some time before she finishes mourning, but when she does, I think things will be different for Alice. With Kev no longer periodically dropping by to wreck her self esteem, Alice will have a comparatively stable life. With her new job, she will be earning enough to start saving money, even with her spending on food and her charitable donations. There is still a long hard journey to be made if she wants to own a home of her own. But I think the worst of her life is behind her.

While she’s not quite living happily ever after, I think her future will be brighter but less eventful from here on. I feel it is a fitting place to end the story.

But of course, if you’ve cared for Alice while reading this, there’s no reason for her story to end for you. If you own The Sims 3, I invite you to download her to your game and carry on guiding her towards whatever happiness you think you can find for her.

This blog will still be host to things related to Alice and Kev in the future, so there is still reason to subscribe to the RSS feed or follow the twitter.

If you are tempted to buy The Sims 3 after reading this, consider supporting this blog by buying through these links to amazon.com or amazon.co.uk

If you’ve found this tale of homelessness affecting, remember there are a great many people living similar experiences around the world. Please consider helping a real-world charity.

That was a wonderful story! Thanks for taking your time to share this.

Thank you for finishing this, upset it’s ending as I get goosebumps thinking about Alice donating all the wages to charity but glad it was completed.

Wow. It’a been an interesting kourney, reading this. I’m sad to see it end, but it has to end somewhere. R.I.P Alice and Kev

Big smiles here. Three cheers for roBurky!

  5. 22 Crilly October 11, 2009 at 12:47 am

This is story is brilliant. With just pictures and words, you have made me cry. (I hardly cry to fictional characters.)roBurky, you are one of the best writers ever! Hope you write something similar!

  6. 23 Kristen October 11, 2009 at 12:48 am

Beautiful! I’m glad it is a (somewhat) happy ending and I will be downloading Alice to play in my town on the Sims 3. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story with all of us!

  7. 24 Gregory October 11, 2009 at 12:53 am

I think you found the perfect way to end this tale, and I thank you for it. The last two pictures wrap it up nicely, and I wouldn’t change a note of this story.

Thank you for sharing Alice and Kev with us.

  8. 25 Tatiana October 11, 2009 at 12:54 am

That was a sweet ending. I love the final panel with the hot air balloon and the flock of birds flying. It seems symbolic of something, maybe of the peace Alice can finally have in her life with Kev gone. Maybe just of aspirations and explorations in her life, and hopefully some sort of achievement.

I worry about Alice because she’s poorly educated, she has a lot of healing to do from her upbringing and her chaotic childhood. Will she be attracted to guys who are somewhat abusive and crazy like her father was? Will she crave drama and conflict in her life even as it settles down, so that she tends to seek out less stable situations? I hope not.

It seems unlikely that she ever bonded with anyone as a child, unless it was her teddy bear. That could cause her a lot of problems with relationships in the future. I hope that she’s able to sort through all that, to find some sort of pillar of hope, stability, love, and goodness in her life.

If we, watching this fictional story, feel our hearts go out to Alice, I can only imagine how much our Heavenly Father, watching our very real trials and sorrows, loves us and grieves for us. Or how much joy he takes in our happiness. May Alice feel somehow inside her fictional universe the love of Roburkey, her creator, and of we who mourn and celebrate with her.

I was so happy when she exulted over her promotion. It nearly broke my heart with joy.

Thanks, Robin, for a great story!

      it’s a game!

      • 28 Kyle February 5, 2011 at 2:57 am

Nope. It’s a story. A story with characters which you may not be able to identify with, or relate to, but whom you can feel for. Tatiana was analyzing it just as you would a novel, or a movie, and I don’t see any harm in that.

Fantastic ending to a brilliant work of storytelling.

a lovely ending for alice, after all she did deserve it 😀

Great job. You’ve managed to touch so many people with the story of two fictional characters. Your story writing abilities are great, and I wish you the best of success in your future endeavors.

I hope Alice manages to turn her life around.

can you include an epilogue by showing us what happens to alice later? like if she ever marries and have kids?

    • 42 Mariia October 11, 2009 at 3:58 am

I understand what you mean, but the blog has to end somewhere. This is the perfect time to end it, even if it doesn’t seem like it. If he ends it right after Alice has kids (if she does) then you would be posting the same thing. Just saying 😀

      • 43 Rodents210 October 11, 2009 at 7:20 am

If it matters any, I did download them, and Alice moved in with Zedadias Wick, married him, and had one son named Felix to represent that she really was lucky in the end. Since both Alice and Zedadias have grown into the Adult stage of life, I got them new clothes that look much like their old ones but are more mature (and in Alice’s case, less ratty). Zedadias is currently a Snitch in the Law Enforcement career and Alice is a Resident in the Medical career.

        🙂

  26. 52 Doc October 11, 2009 at 2:06 am

It’s not often that someone would have the gall to publicly take a pro-homeless, pro-suffering stance, but it’s what I aim to do in this multi-part rich argument.

While the tale of Alice and Kev (just Alice, now – how darkly amusing) may have affected the emotions of some weak readers, my iron-clad limbic system has ignored the faux emotion of the story and passed the logic on. Are any of you in favor of communism? No?

Because if you’re against having a lower class of society, you’re communists! The second one person rises above another person, we get capitalism. Sure, it’s sad that people are homeless, but it’s a necessary evil that’s a result of the computers you’re using, the cushy lives you’re living.

What sick, twisted minds must favor stories such as these, subconsciously realizing my point yet being too inactive and too gutless to even take a pro-communist stance. Poor Alice? Poor you for not being smart enough to realize that your emotions are being subtly played at the hands this “RoBurky”!

I implore you, gutless, brainless commentators: do NOT give to charities. Each donation is a step toward communism. And when you step toward communism, you step toward Hitler.

Dr. William Monty Hughes, III, Esq., Ph.D., IQ 215

    “Cogito Ergo Sum”

    • 53 missplet October 11, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Wow, you couldn’t be more wrong if you tried!

First, “do NOT give to charities. Each donation is a step toward communism”

Are you kidding? Charity is an anti-socialist conceit, since it relieves the government of its responsibility to look after its people. By giving to charity you are aiding the capitlaist system, not ushering in a communist revolution.

I assume you’re American, given your fear of communists and complete lack of knowledge of anything else happening anywhere else in the world.

Homelessness is not a necessary evil. Most Western European countries are based on the principles of social democracy, wherein you have elements of socialism within a capitalist framework. In practice that means things like universal healthcare and social housing for those that need it.

There are still homeless people, but it is not a necessary evil. Neither is it a threat to capitalism. Check out the standard of living in Sweden as proof of that.

      • 54 Mouchas October 18, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Hey, I’m American – that makes me a fear living of communists, don’t no sh*& going on in the world!

      • 55 Mouchas October 18, 2009 at 11:20 pm

FYI – Jane Addams was the first Social worker (google it) and oh, guess what – she’s American. You can thank her for the health / social housings we have today.

    • 56 Pam October 11, 2009 at 3:28 pm

      @”Doc” –

Do you honestly believe you are impressing anyone here with your rhetoric spewing? I find it difficult to believe that you are college educated, much less that you carry a Ph.D. You have embarrassed yourself in a public forum because most everyone here thinks you are an idiot. Being kind to your fellow man does NOT encourage communism, and you are seriously misguided if you think so.

To suggest that showing compassion is a “step toward Hitler”, is one of the most ridiculous, backwards, uneducated, ignorant statements I have ever read – and believe me, I’ve read a few.

Go back to your hole in the ground, or the rock you crawled out from under. No one here wants to hear your foolishness and hate.

    • 57 meezletoe October 11, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Everyone…he’s right. Compassion is Communist! After all, the concept of communism did come before giving to the poor, sharing with your neighbors, and even love-love-love. Stop loving people! It’s communist! Sharing knowledge?! – communist! Empathy – communist! God is communist! Stop going to church (and for Capitalism’s sake, stop putting money in that basket!)
If you don’t embrace Greed, you’re being unpatriotic! In order to secure our society’s great democracy, our constitution’s promise to protect our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (or property) and have a stable economy, we must embrace a totalitarian state of mind! Which means rejecting all aspects of communism, the good (hah!) and the bad (rawr)!
Though I always thought that Hitler was Fascist and hated Communism, but, well, you’re the one with the Ph.D, right? 😀 After all, it’s in your signature (why’d you include Descartes in there though – I don’t see the correlation).

Anywayz…I might have gotten off-topic. What I meant to say was:
      WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! ALIIIIICE….T_T It’s oooover ~~
Siz a good ending. T_T *nods*

    • 58 Doc October 11, 2009 at 8:07 pm

You people DO realize I’m joking, right? The whole thing was an obvious joke. You don’t need to…y’know, care.

      • 59 Nina October 11, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Oh Doc, if you really believe that was an obvious joke then you haven’t encountered most of the Internet.

      • 60 Blue Tiger October 11, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Probably the least funny joke I’ve ever heard. There are a lot of people who are extremely sensitive about this issue.

      • 61 Arca October 15, 2009 at 12:42 am

I have to say that Meezletoe’s version was much funnier than your attempt. 😛

      • 62 ali November 22, 2009 at 4:52 am

took me a second, but yes, i figured it out eventually. It’s not very good joke, especially since hardly anyone realized it was. It was a bit insensitive if you ask me.
But hey, that’s just my opinion.

    • 63 Doc October 11, 2009 at 10:58 pm

I was making fun of homeless people in the same way RoBurky was making a game out of their lives. You could take it literally either way, but the joke was at the expense of pseudo-intellectual douchebags, not poor people.

      • 64 meezletoe October 12, 2009 at 12:04 am

Hmm. If it was a joke *strokes chin*, then I think I get it. I definitely got off-topic in my rant there anyway. It’s all because of Moooo drama.
I think the joke is a bit too complicated for me. Sorry. -_-; And here I was thinking I’d just gotten the hang of satire. I’m gonna have to re-read that comment a couple times. XD

      • 65 meezletoe October 12, 2009 at 12:14 am

Still though, it’s a bit ironic. For me too. We’re all sitting quite comfortably in our chairs I’m sure. How people react to homelessness in their private lives is the point I think..?

      • 66 Jackrabbit October 12, 2009 at 7:30 am

I got it, if it’s any help.

        It’s not?Oh.

    • 67 woodenemus October 12, 2009 at 6:29 pm

You are such a midget major, Doc! You emu!

    • 68 Kayla C October 13, 2009 at 3:42 am

      To Doc:

Was it truly necessary for you to put “Esq., Ph.D., IQ 215” after your name? Your opinion still means nothing to me, no matter how many titles you hold.

A person could go to a million colleges, learn everything there is to know, and still be one of the most ignorant people on this planet. You are the exact epitome of this.

    • 70 Rich October 13, 2009 at 1:06 pm

I laughed my ass off, don’t worry. Srsly people, if you can’t spot that someone signing Dr. Esq. PhD. IQ 215 is joking, you need to get a real doctor to put a cast on your broken funnybone.

      Run!

      There’s a troll loose…

    • 75 Ryann October 21, 2009 at 9:20 am

Is it even possible to have an IQ of 215?

      • 76 ali November 22, 2009 at 4:44 am

the highest iq ever recorded (atleast I think it is) is 228. So yes, it’s possible, but not likely. Doc was joking about that

    • 77 ortegawn August 12, 2010 at 4:22 am

Just to point out another mistake… You’re not taking a step towards Hitler if you’re taking a step towards communism… in fact you’re taking a step away from it. Fascism (incredibly similar to Nazism) and communism are at opposite ends of the political spectrum. Hitler was all about upper class and lower class being entirely separate. 🙂

  27. 78 Reid October 11, 2009 at 2:11 am

Thanks for using The Sims 3 so imaginitively to such a great effect. It’s a wonderful, unusual way to have played the game, and not only has it resulted in a genuinely touching story, but also made me question what is really possible within games.

Awesome, in the kind of way that makes your heart warmer.

  31. 82 Gerard Delaney October 11, 2009 at 2:18 am

Great job with this story and an excellent idea to offer up Alice for download. A great way to include people in the end of the story

  32. 83 Katie October 11, 2009 at 2:26 am

I loved Alice and Kev from the beginning, but I must say I’ve been highly disappointed with the past several posts. It’s a pity to see, what began as a great tale about homelessness in a virtual world, end in such a fashion. 😦

  33. 84 Daniel October 11, 2009 at 2:30 am

    Thanks =)
    Terrific.

  34. 85 Kite October 11, 2009 at 2:30 am

I like the way this ended 🙂 I’m glad there’s hope for Alice to have a better life.

  35. 86 Katie October 11, 2009 at 2:39 am

    The End.

Sad to see it go but so happy that you shared these bizarre little lives with us. Thank You!

  36. 87 LadyRose October 11, 2009 at 2:45 am

That was a very fitting ending.
But I can’t wait to have an Alice and Kev of my own…I plan to make a family with a little boy and his single mom that Alice can grown up with, and marry. So she can have at least one friend as a child, more importantly one who understands what it’s like to be homeless.
Kev…I may just let Kev be Kev on a plot fo his own, far away from his daughter. or I might just kill him off the second Alice hits her teen years. >:)

I really can’t wait to play this homeless challenge with the world adventures expansion, because they’ll be tents which would makes things a touch easier for homeless sims everywhere.

Thank you, RoBurky, for an entertaining story and ideas for later experimentation in the sims 3.

  37. 88 YLAU October 11, 2009 at 2:57 am

Thanks for the awesome story. I hated to see Kev die…but I loved the story 🙂
    Been a great journey.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share Alice and Kev’s story. I have really enjoyed reading each entry of this blog since it started. You are a very talented storyteller. I’m sad to see this blog end, but I think Alice is going to be okay.

  39. 90 Leonardo Alcantara October 11, 2009 at 3:14 am

I have to be honest and tell I don’t even like The Sims…but this story is a lot more than the liking or not the game itself…it is amazing how such few pictures with the right text (both in amount and in quality) can make you think things over.

Alice and Kev were one of the best stories I’ve ever had the opportunity to read and I’m very glad that you have shared this over to everyone. It is astouning how the story twists and the happines and anger it contains can move so many people.

I believe this only goes to show the amazing texts you have provided us with and my hat is off for you my friend!

Hope you do drop by sometimes to let us know how Alice is doing altough she is just bytes of information contained in your computere we (and I’ll include everyone who reads this blog) really care about her! So let us know if she finds out the love of her life, marries and have a couple of kids of her own… I’m sure she will make an excellent mother.

    Regards,
    Leo

  44. 95 quanta1000 October 11, 2009 at 3:31 am

Great ending and story roBurky! Amazing! It’s a perfect way of closing it but leaving space to wonder what is going to happen! And then, with that, we can download her! I hope you had loads of fun and your future is very bright for you.

  45. 96 Mariia October 11, 2009 at 3:53 am

Aww, I didn’t get first comment, well anyways ignore my childish comment. I really love this blog, I remember a couple days after it started there was a advertisement on the Sims 3 official site, and I checked it out. I’m definitely not sorry I did. It’s a inspirational blog, it’s awkward to say that about virtual characters. In the Sims 3 you get so attached to your characters though, I think it’s because of the trait system. During the month-long hiatus I lost my connection with the characters, so I wasn’t very affected by any of the posts since. I do not mean that in a rude way, it’s just my opinion. Since Kev’s death most people are starting to feel sorry for him, I have since the blog started because I have a step-sibling with schizophrenia and my grandmother was very poor as a child. I know Kev didn’t have a mental- illness, but he had as much of a mental- illness you could have in the Sims 3. Truly inspirational blog in total though roBurky. Congratulations, you deserve it.

Great story, thanks so much for the entertainment. 🙂

  50. 103 Jackrabbit October 11, 2009 at 7:56 am

Such a shame the world will never see the like of Kev’s Ninja bin-kicking skills again!

Are you kidding? Watch any high street in a British town for an hour on a saturday night and I almost guarantee that you will see a drunk person kick a bin. Sadly they usually don’t have the “Insane” trait to blame it on.

  57. 121 Nicole October 11, 2009 at 9:33 am

Thank you. That was a great story. You pushed the limits of what can be done with today’s games. Entertaining and sometimes rather realistic. It tells you how much games have progressed – in terms of being able to teach us a few things here and there.

I’ll look forward to whatever you have in store in the future. It was a pleasure to read.

  58. 122 Evil Jim October 11, 2009 at 9:39 am

Thank you for sharing this story all the way through. It’s even more remarkable to me that it was written largely by a computer. I’ll keep checking back to see what other related material comes up to supplement the site.

  59. 123 Sol Invictus October 11, 2009 at 9:58 am

Thanks for creating such a witty, heartwarming, emotionally engaging story.

  60. 124 Yan October 11, 2009 at 10:34 am

Thank you so much for the great story! 😀

  61. 125 Tanja October 11, 2009 at 10:40 am

A beautiful end, though I must say I find it rather funny, because I downloaded her for my game and just had her and her dad live in the game while I played my family, when I met teen Alice later in the game, she had other traits, more lucky traits actually and her father and her lived in a tiny house…

A shame your alice didn’t have as much luck as the one I had (though mine was always sobbing)

  62. 126 Fritjof October 11, 2009 at 11:07 am

Such a perfect ending… Bravo, that was and incredible story! Thank you very much.

  63. 127 Daniel October 11, 2009 at 11:15 am

I demand this be bound and published as a book (naturally with permission from EA). It is simply too great not to.

  64. 129 Dizzy October 11, 2009 at 11:47 am

This is such a brilliant story, really well told. All the effort put in to this has been greatly appreciated by everyone. Thank you very much!
Also reading this blog started my Sims 3 obsession! 🙂

  65. 130 Lisa October 11, 2009 at 12:45 pm

Thank you. I enjoyed this a lot.

  66. 131 Johnathan October 11, 2009 at 1:03 pm

    Very well done. Congratulations!

    That was a fantastic story.
But all good things have to come to an end, I suppose.
Brilliant writing and pictures. I’ll be sure to tell my friends so they can read this too.

    Long live
    Alice and Kev.

  68. 133 Jewel2D October 11, 2009 at 1:34 pm

It has been years since she’d passed by the park. At first she’d avoided it for the pain it brought, but finally it just wasn’t part of her world anymore. Zane held her hand and made his eyes dip and rise as his lips curled in an attempt to make her laugh. It caused her to stifle a giggle which instantly brought a smile to both their faces.

She walked across the park to an old bench. It has seen much better days, and much worse. As she sat down she lifted Zane and put him in her lap. He cuddled against her and held her arm close to him like a pillow and blanket all rolled into one.

“There once was a man Zane, a man named Kevin and he was the meanest, nastiest man you could ever wish to met. But what the man was hiding, what the man kept, was more love then any man could ever wish to hold. He just held it so close and so tight that all that he let go of was the bad stuff. But more then anything, he wanted to share what he was holding with someone special. That someone was his daughter. This is the story of how he learned to let go and how she learned how to see it…”

    —-

Just something that popped in my head after reading this last entry. Thank you so much for sharing their story with us.

  69. 134 Phoebe October 11, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Hi, I thought the Alice and Kev story has been wonderful. Very interesting and thought provoking…

I would like to answer one of the comments posted here. I do not think it is communist/ fascist to give to charity or to live in a society that helps people out. I live in a country, the UK, where we have decided that most of those people in need should be provided with some sort of accommodation and some money so they can eat and pay basic bills, and have mostly free healthcare. I personally feel we could do more to help and empower people to change their lives, and so I work with homeless young people in part to make a difference.

    Thank you again..

  70. 135 Lisa October 11, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Thank you so much for sharing the story of Alice and Kev with us. I have added their household to almost every neighborhood I have created in Sims 3 just because I grew so fond of them, and loved the diversity of having homeless sims in my world(s). In each neighborhood, they had different experiences and met different families and always added an element of surprise. Your blog was so enjoyable to read, and your relevant screenshots have inspired me in my own blogging and storytelling. Much luck to you in all you do!

  71. 136 Sara October 11, 2009 at 2:09 pm

is that the final? (im sorry but if it is I am soo surprised it took that long to make!) it was very beautiful though

  72. 137 Johnny C. October 11, 2009 at 2:22 pm

    So Long, Alice and Kev!

And Thanks for all the fish!

  74. 139 lapepe1 October 11, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Beautiful ending. Thank you for your wonderful stories over the past months. They are the reason I bought the game. 🙂

  75. 140 TinA October 11, 2009 at 2:48 pm

aw, it’s so sad that you’ll quit writing about her but also a perfect ending..

  76. 141 Jessica October 11, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I loved your blog!!!!! I dont know if i missed it but what is Alice’s five trait? Great job!

    • 142 roBurky October 11, 2009 at 3:21 pm

When she became an adult, I discovered that I must have accidentally closed the trait window without selecting one when she became a teenager. So I gave her the ‘unlucky’ trait at adulthood, meaning she has ended up with only four traits.

      • 143 Chad17 October 12, 2009 at 1:09 am

I hate it when that happens. I once got a kid with three traits only LOL!

      • 144 Sciffy Circo October 23, 2009 at 7:20 pm

I was thinking, if I ever download and start a younger version, rather than the young adult Alice I did, or I do the “midlife crisis” thing, I would give Alice “Insane” to see how it played out. I’m aware that sometimes, mental illness is first discovered and diagnosed between ages 18-25. It’s not always inherited though. I have many friends and loved ones with bipolar mood disorder, and I’m told even if both parents have it, the chances of a child inheriting is 1 in 4. I’m not sure what the chances of ADHD are, but my daughter inheritited from her father.

Heck, if I ever give Alice any biological kids, I think I’ll give at least one of them Insane and/ or Inappropriate. She does want to be surrounded by family, but I may adopt a few. I mean, should I REALLY make Alice grow up to be barefoot and pregnant all the time? Send her to fertility clinics? Adopt? Well, it is her wish to be surrounded by family… Do we play Nature vs. Nurture? Or do some of each? Hrm…

I’d like to see Alice star in Nature vs. Nurture. 🙂

  77. 145 rabassa1 October 11, 2009 at 3:21 pm

yay she’s calling zedadias!!! i hope anyway

    deffo downloading them

  78. 146 Unmoved October 11, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I have to agree with what Katie said up top. I have always loved this blog, but it seems that when Roburky got back from the break, it was rushed to the end of what previously had been an incredibly written story. I am disappointed and unmoved by this ending. But thats just one persons opinion.

  79. 147 heather October 11, 2009 at 3:38 pm

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA im miss you :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

  80. 148 Warren October 11, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Well done, Rob. I feel like I knew Alice and Kev. I think you’ve managed to create an early example of what the future will see as art.

    • 149 medleymisty October 11, 2009 at 4:46 pm

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

I certainly consider my Sims story as art. And when it’s done I am going to try and write a full text version, and people’s reactions to that made me think.

Some people seem to think that Sims stories are somehow “lesser” and aren’t as valid as straight text. And they also seem to be allergic to the idea of using the pictures from the game to help tell the story. And this is people who use the game for their stories, which makes me scratch my head. Why use the game at all if you feel that way about it?

Anyway….I do think that Sims stories are an art form.

  81. 150 Niki October 11, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I’ve followed your story from the beginning. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🙂

  82. 151 sfury October 11, 2009 at 4:35 pm

    Wow, so many comments! o_O

But it’s been a great run and I guess everyone wants to say bye.

So here’s a “thank you” from me too, roBurky, and good luck in your next endeavor. Also keep us posted! 🙂

  83. 152 Gamermama October 11, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Great ending! Thanks for taking the time to share Alice & Kev!!

  84. 153 Chad17 October 11, 2009 at 5:24 pm

This blog will still be host to things related to Alice and Kev in the future, so there is still reason to subscribe to the RSS feed or follow the twitter.

DOES THIS MEAN IT MAY CONTINUE?!?!?!?!?!?

    YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  85. 154 worldwaffle October 11, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Thanks roburky. I would never think a game developer could write.

See y’all everyone! It’s been a fun ride.

  86. 155 anit1983 October 11, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Thank you for such a beautiful story. I’m sad to see it’s over.

  87. 156 Purple October 11, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Wow, that was an incredible story! I hope Alice really does have a better life!

  88. 157 meezletoe October 11, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Thaank you roBurky…For breaking my heart and putting it back together again with a hammer :'(. But that was a great story :D. You *poit*, I am sure, have had an interesting experience as well.

  89. 160 Kozz October 11, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Bravo, roBurky. Thank you for not only conceiving of this idea in Sims 3, but for your narrative as we followed the virtual lives of Alice & Kev.

I, like many I’m sure, discovered the blog partway through the story. I went back and began reading from the very start… through all the heartache, embarrassment, shame, pride, loneliness and misunderstanding experienced by Alice & Kev. And I watched and waited while the story was on hiatus, knowing that it would be well worth the wait. And I was right!

So again, I say BRAVO. Thanks so much for what you’ve written.

  90. 161 Blue Tiger October 11, 2009 at 10:57 pm

There are so many comments on here that I guess no one will ever read mine, but I want to post it anyway.

First: Thank you for the most beautiful and moving blog I have ever read (I don’t read a lot of blogs because most aren’t interesting to me).
I wish Sims stories could be made into books. This would be a bestseller.

Also, I had no idea how emotionally complicated The Sims could be. Sims were always just those funny little people who talked in nonsense words and threw tantrums when they were hungry. But Alice’s donation of her first paycheck to charity and Kev’s attempt to make amends before he died… This story really made me feel for the little virtual people, which in turn made me feel for all of the people, whether I know them or not, who seem not to matter in my life.

    They’re all people.

    Even if they are Sims.

  91. 163 A_J_9_8 October 12, 2009 at 12:35 am

I can’t believe I grew so attacthed to this story.I know it sounds dumb, but I learned alot from reading this story. It was amazing to a fault. You have amazing talents RoBurky. You could do so much with.I will miss Alice and Kev.I will miss Zed.And I will even miss Shirley.Goodbye,RoBurky.All good things must come to an end.

  92. 164 :) October 12, 2009 at 1:00 am

i don’t want the story to end:( but great story annnywayyys 🙂

  93. 165 Chad17 October 12, 2009 at 1:11 am

I downloaded her as she was now, and then once I saw Kev’s grave, I noticed it said this:

    Here lies Kev, somewhat missed.

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
    SOMEWHAT!!!!
Oh yeah, I killed Shirley and Roxie so Alice has Zed all to herself! 😉

  94. 166 Kevin October 12, 2009 at 2:35 am

i bet there will be a halloween update : Kev’s Surprise Visit : can anyone else imagine that?

  95. 167 vigilantsims October 12, 2009 at 2:39 am

This was such a great story! I enjoyed it so much, and read it everyday after I found it that you posted. I really hope you’ll start a new series soon, but you may have a hard time catching people the same way you did with this. Still, I hope you try. But there are people living in all sorts of hard conditions and I would- (not sure how to say this) enjoy reading how you would depict these different situations.

  96. 168 Cody October 12, 2009 at 2:39 am

Thank you so much for this great, and touching story.

    God bless.

  104. 176 universalandparticular October 12, 2009 at 8:43 am

Thank you for great story and especially for helping ‘homeless people ‘ this way. I learnt a lot from your style of writing. ALthough I write differently I have the same goal: to reach to people all around the globe and make the aware, connect with them, make them feel and think again.
I would be very happy if you find time to explore some of my stories and let me know what you think.
I have two more blogs as well: http://hubpages.com/hub/So-much-makes-sense-once-we-get-the-connections

  105. 177 Jessica October 12, 2009 at 10:16 am

I sat down with my husband once the final entry came out and we read through from start to finish.

    Intentionally NOT reading the commentary.

The story is consistent in quality and style from start to finish, and it ends in a well-rounded and natural way.

I would encourage you to turn it into hardcopy and try and publish it as a book, turning the profits partially or totally to charity. The characters are touching and genuine and the pictures are very expressive. I personally would purchase that book and read it to my children when they were pre-teens to encourage conversations about people who are less fortunate or otherwise ‘different’ and to help teach them compassion and thoughtfullness.

I am thrilled that I came here all those months ago, and more at peace with how the whole thing happened now that I’ve gone through the story once more with a focus on the story and not on the several hundred thoughts from random internet people per entry.

Bravo, RoBurky. It was amazing and I will definitely keep an eye for anything from you in the future.

    Thank you.

  106. 179 Graham D Pilling October 12, 2009 at 10:36 am

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading A&K — thanks so much for taking the time to write up each episode.

All the best for future endeavours!

    Thanks for this great story

  112. 185 Simon Smith October 12, 2009 at 5:57 pm

That was really rather touching. Very well done. But you’ve set the bar so high I don’t think my own playing about could ever match it. Darn you to heck!

  113. 186 Alisa October 12, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Thank you for such a wonderful blog! I expect great things from you 🙂

  114. 187 ricketybridge October 12, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I got chills, man. This story has been really beautiful. I’m soooo inspired to do my own Sims blog, and being able to download Alice is such a cool idea. 😉

  115. 188 Arshei October 12, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I just wanted to say thanks so much for creating this awesome story I really enjoyed reading the storyline and progression. I have seen where you have the characters available for download but I was wondering if you also had the lot where they lived available as well? I’m sad to see it end but it was really good. Thanks again!

  116. 190 Requienna October 12, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Great story, great ending! It couldn’t have been better. Thank you very much, roBurky!

By the way, is there a possibility to not only download the lot with Alice on it, but the whole neigborhood as it was at the point of Kev’s death? I mean, did you upload something like the whole savegame?

  117. 193 PenTa October 12, 2009 at 8:34 pm

    _O_

Hail to a work of beauty.
Probably just one of a kind,
May the universe be generous and gift us with more of these works of art.
I’m not just talking about Robin.
I’m not just talking about Sims’ stories.
    I’m talking to the world.
These stories, published on blogs, to me, are a new form of art.
An mixture of literature, and visual arts.
    To all who might hear:
Tell the world about the tragedy,
    Of Alice,
    And Kev.

Dude, you had me crying by the end.

  118. 194 tipix7 October 12, 2009 at 8:58 pm

It was simply written, very observant and drew you in.
    Bravo and well done.

  121. 197 angelzzzdaydream0 October 13, 2009 at 1:29 am

I absolutely loved this story! It was so touching. I have downloaded Alice and Zeb and will be sure to give them a place in my town. I guess I really route for the underdog! Great job! Thanks for such a wonderful story! Huggs! =o)

  122. 198 Akaso October 13, 2009 at 2:18 am

    Cool story, bro.

…No, seriously, that was a really good story. I’m glad I stuck with it. Thank you.

  123. 199 David October 13, 2009 at 2:31 am

Thanks for sharing the story and the family for download. I downloaded the Kev and child Alice and played them in my game. However, I had Constance Shelly adopt Alice and eventually she became leader of the free world.

  124. 200 Becki October 13, 2009 at 3:17 am

I just found this today through a link on Facebook. I loved it! Really awesome story and characters.

I also noticed in your profile on your website, you mentioned having worked with kids who have autism. As someone with Asperger Syndrome myself, I just wanted to say I appreciate that you helped them. =D

  125. 201 Erika October 13, 2009 at 3:27 am

I’m sad to see it end but I thank you so very much for sharing a very moving, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking and always enthralling story with us.

You did a marvelous job with Alice and Kev!

  126. 202 rubybastille October 13, 2009 at 6:17 am

Thanks for sharing a great experiment and a thought-provoking story!

  127. 203 meezletoe October 13, 2009 at 7:06 am

Ahhhh XD I see! I like anything confusing, but I think I prefer people not knowing just cause their opinion kinda changes according to it. Since sometimes it’s surprising too….
And yes, I’ve heard of girls named Robin here in the states (never met one I think o_o). *points at you* YOU SIR ARE MUCH MORE MISCHIEVOUS THAN I’D THOUGHT!! *runs off and gets struck by lightning* (jk)

  128. 204 Adoryble October 13, 2009 at 7:42 am

Awesome story. Great way to end things. Thanks for taking the time to do this!

  129. 205 Ashley October 13, 2009 at 10:45 am

Goodness, my heart went with Alice through her whole life! This was an epic story! Like a roller coaster. I enjoyed every moment of it! Good Job!

  130. 206 JanetC October 13, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Thank you for the journey that this blog has taken both us and yourself on.

I wish you well in your study and hope the seeds sown here will continue to grow.

    God bless you.

    Journey onwards.

  131. 207 fingirl12 October 13, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Bravo. 🙂 though it has ended, i think you’ve done a wonderful job! 🙂 thank you for sharing this with us1 🙂

  132. 208 nici October 13, 2009 at 3:50 pm

While I enjoyed reading this I find it a little odd that the story was abruptly halted when you announced you could no longer handle the pressure of writing a blog, then decided you could, only to bring us all back for 3 more updates and a finale. The last 3 updates weren’t worth the anticipation that was built up during this time. You should have just ended it there.

    • 209 roBurky October 13, 2009 at 4:33 pm

That’s kind of what I was attempting to do, but I wanted to do something better than abruptly discontinuing it. After I realised I couldn’t continue the blog in the way that I had been, I started trying to find an ending that would make sense and be satisfying.

  133. 210 Molly October 13, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Thanks for the story, I really enjoyed it.

    Lovely ending.

  134. 211 simsample October 13, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Thanks, Robin- I really had fun reading this. And you’ve inspired a lot of people to play the game in a similar way, too. 🙂

  135. 212 Dylan October 13, 2009 at 11:39 pm

I hope you may decide later to make another Sims 3 blog. You are such a great writer

  136. 213 HOPY October 14, 2009 at 12:52 am

I find it rather weird that so many people were digitally abusing Kev earlier, but now are going, “Poor Kev. Poor Kev. I’ll miss Kev. I don’t think Kev should have died.” Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
How very arrogant of us, don’t you think?
Me, I liked Kev. His utter bizarreness and weird passions always made me laugh and he distracted me from the heartbreak that this story is full of. I think Kev is the somewhat evil random corner of a person’s personality. We ALL have a bit of Kev in us, and in some people it’s just more pronounced.
Farewell, Kev. May you bring your weirdness with you to the Great Digital Beyond. We will all miss you.
(But I still think you kind of deserved it.)

    • 214 Sarra October 16, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Well, he DID try to make amends, didn’t he?
Thanks for giving us a wake-up call on the abusing/mourning thing too.

      • 215 HOPY December 1, 2009 at 12:07 am

The hypocrisy is just weird. Seriously, people, you can’t make fun of people and then mourn for them when they die.
Although that would make an interesting Sims experiment. Take one Sim and have a relative make fun of the aforementioned Sim, then see whether or not they mourn.
I tried to make a different version of this on my own Sims 3 game and it failed miserably. So Robin (can I call you Bob?), I appreciate the pictures a lot more now.
        Keep on Simmin’!

Bwahahah.. Now she shall get a house and get married and have children and work somewhere else than a grocery store… 😀

  138. 217 panther0567 October 14, 2009 at 5:31 am

I’ll miss these stories, they were very touching, and I thought it was great that you are also linking to homeless charities. 🙂 LONG LIVE ALICE AND KEV!

  139. 218 Mewka October 14, 2009 at 10:43 am

I kinda understand. It takes so much time for you to make this. So ending it is kinda of a solution. Well nice work, and it’s good that you gave you’re readers a choice about what ending is best for Alice.

What you could try (if u want) is opening a blog somewere where you’re readers can share about what they did with Alice. Might be cool. After that, I think I would quit too.

  140. 219 StarSarah - TheShenstonLegacy October 14, 2009 at 1:42 pm

roBurky – i am so glad you cleared up which sex you are as for reasons i dont understand – it was really bugging me. Isn’t weird how we have to know these things about people we dont know including their age.

Anyway love love love the story. Will you be doing another one?

AWWW I’m Gonna miss Alice and Kev soo much!!
    😦

  142. 221 Xander October 14, 2009 at 5:01 pm

This was probably one of the most moving and heartwrenching short stories I’ve read in a long time. Mad props to you for getting the screenshots, poses and backgrounds so well- they felt so lifelike.

  143. 222 Wrex October 14, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Thank you for doing this. I loved every segment. If you ever decide to do another “experiment” with the Sims, I’m sure everyone here would love to see it. Again, thank you. This was awesome.

  144. 223 Breatheunreal October 14, 2009 at 8:17 pm

    Wow….
I cannot praise this blog enough,
this was an amazing story that i had never even thought of trying to do in the sims.
well done for a fantastic story!!!

  145. 224 Gabs October 14, 2009 at 9:29 pm

I did download Alice and Kev. In my scenario Kev died while Alice was still a teen (he spent so much time in jail I couldn’t keep him fed – oops).

At the current stage of the story Alice is now also long since dead, having died of old age after achieving her lifetime wish of becoming a world renowned surgeon, and raising twin daughters (she married Trigger Broke from down the street).

Right now Alice’s grand-daughter Maria Alice is raising a son while trying to become a creature-robot cross breeder. Alice’s ghost haunts their house, along with several other expired family members.

Anyone else want to share their Alice and Kev stories?

    • 225 Sciffy Circo October 23, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Wait, you got a lifetime wish of world renowned surgeon? I got a wish of surrounded by family. Maybe we started at different points in life? I was doing young adult Alice.

    • 226 HOPY December 1, 2009 at 12:13 am

I downloaded them and Kev promptly died. Apparently he was starving. Then Alice lost her job and ended up dying penniless and utterly alone because all the prospective suitors in town were either fat or snobby. (My fault: I love making Sims get fat.) I’m kind of evil when it comes to Sims, but when I remade them, I had Kev beg for forgiveness and he ended up married to a fat old person. (Again, my fault: see above.)

  146. 227 Bonnie October 14, 2009 at 9:29 pm

You have inspired me to finally take a few snaps of my own Sims, carefully controlling the pause button and positioning the camera for the best angles. Editing this must have been time consuming amidst your busy life.

Thank you for taking the time to finish this tale of woe, and of hope.

  147. 228 ♥Mikayla♥ October 14, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Very good story! 😦 it ended! But, it has too. I hope you will write another sometime. 🙂

  148. 229 V2Blast October 15, 2009 at 6:33 am

That was an amazingly delivered story. Sad to see Kev go (as much of an ass as he was, he was a main part of the story). Hope Alice recovers and succeeds in life.

I feel a bit emotionally attached to these characters… And that’s not a common thing for me.

    • 230 Leksi Wit October 19, 2009 at 8:42 am

That’s exactly how I feel. How could I be so upset about Kev’s death despite all the horrible things he did? I felt compassion for a freakin’ Sim. This is a first.

Robin, you have powerful narrative skills: Continue to use them for good and you will lead a happy existence – much like Alice – despite your physical circumstances.

    • 231 HOPY December 1, 2009 at 12:15 am

Dude, if you’re going to be all sad for Kev, you can’t insult him. That’s actually a law in several of the US states.

  149. 232 westiedog123 October 15, 2009 at 7:50 pm

See i told you! He is was and forevermore be a GUY!!!!!!!!!!! Now on to the real post.

    The pain and sorrow,
    of losing Alice and Kev
    breaks sim loving hearts.

Oh yah, im deep. And now another one!

    Kev kicked the bucket.
    Alice is moving on now.
    We’ll miss you guys.

(cue sad song as readers walk away from this webpage, of joy, happiness, sorrow, anger, and stink trails). T_T

  150. 233 Mallory October 16, 2009 at 12:25 am

I am so sad this has come to end. But it was one of the most touching and amazing sim stories I have read in a long time.

I downloaded Alice as she is now and married her to Zedidais or however you spell it 😛
They have 3 little boys 🙂
They have a nice house and she has a career in culinary 😀

    😛

    Alice&Kev live on!

  151. 234 Grendelthered October 16, 2009 at 1:57 am

    can I download Kev instead?

  152. 235 Tonnina October 16, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I just wanted to say what I did with Alice and Kev in my game.

I downloaded them and played them pretty much the same as you, only Kev keep finding these expensive rocks in the garbage (Who throws away rocks?) so I gave them to Alice to keep safe until she was a young adult and could sell them without sharing the money with Kev. After failing many attempts at falling in love with anyone, I had Kev give up on love… or so I thought.

After Alice grew into a very pretty young lady, Alice kicked him out, claiming she was sick of his ridiculing. She sold those rocks, except for the pinkish ones, those were her favorite color! After selling those rocks she had enough money to build a small house. Just enough room for one Sim. Alice had the wish to raise 5 kids from babies to adults. I had her start by changing her traits (she has Great Kisser, Hopeless Romantic, Excitable, Vegetarian, and Flirty) then I had her become fertile so we could get this done in 2 to 3 pregnancies, or so I hoped.

I had her fall for many guys, but never become their girlfriend or wife… She ended up having 1 baby per pregnancy for the first four, and they were all boys. She decided to do the (tormenting) I’m-gonna-name-all-my-babies-names-that-start-with-the-letter-“blank” and used the letter T. The boy’s names are Thomas, Trent, Topher, and Tobby. All her boys were born with in a few days of each other and all of them had different fathers. One was a rock star, one was an unemployed bum, one was her maid, and one was almost a copy of Kev! (he was a mean, grumpy guy)

When Alice had finally seduced her old Paper boy, she had twins, two girls. She named the girls Tiffannie, and Tessa. By this time I noticed a want pop up for Alice “Congratulate Kev”. It seemed he got married (to someone with commitment issues) I was able to see this through Alice’s Family Tree. I like to think Alice was happy that her dad actually found someone who could put up with all his issues. a few in-game days later and I saw that Kev and his new wife had a baby boy together. Alice finally had a brother, granted he was younger than most of her own children.

So this is where I am at. Alice is going to raise her kids and try to make a living on her own. I just hope none of her children are scared the way she went about obtaining her life time wish. it’s a challenge. I’ve never played as a single mom in the Sims before! I enjoyed the story of Alice and Kev very much. I believe I was referred here by Felicia Day from Twitter when you had about 3 stories done. I was hooked from the start. You did a good job!

    • 236 Sciffy Circo October 23, 2009 at 7:40 pm

Wow, yours was the weirdest story I’ve heard so far! Alice with a half brother, LOL! I have seen in real life, siblings who are about 20 years apart. If the first was born when the parents are 18, who’s to say a 38 year old wouldn’t try? Heck, women can probably go till they’re 45 or so (though they may need some help after 35), but men can go pretty much forever. Eek, 58 year old Kev could give Alice a brother 40 years younger!

I could see Alice looking for love in all the wrong places as well, hoping a baby would give her the love she never had. I could see Alice being happy for her dad, and with her Good trait, she’d try to make up with him.

I have yet to see any sims get married on their own. I had one move out, though I can’t see where the heck he moved to. I’ve searched the neighborhood, and it seems he became a townie.

      • 237 Allie October 23, 2009 at 9:18 pm

        Hehehe.

Real life story here – just had to share. My mom was 17 when she had her first child. My dad was 21 when he had his first child. They were 36 and 51 when they met and got married. By the time I was born I had 6 older brothers – the youngest 18 years older and the oldest 34 years older. 🙂

Why yes, “You’ve Got Mail” has one of the funniest lines in the world for me! 🙂

    • 238 shannon February 14, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I downloaded adult Alice so I could carry on the story. It might have been done for you RoBurky but it wasn’t done for me. I moved her into Sunset Valley and move Zedadias into Sunset Valley too. I made them best friends and after a couple days he was able to propose marriage to her. I made him and they are now living in a huge house. Zed is a spy and Alice is the CEO of a Mega Cooporation. They have 4 kids two twin boys (Aaron and Alex) and twin girls (Abby and Annie). So it turns out Alice is living a pretty good life! It’s almost Alice’s birthday she’ll be an elder soon. Zed is already an elder and is retired.
      THE END!

  153. 239 limebuddhist October 16, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Jut want to join the hundreds (maybe) who are saying amazing blog, well done. R.I.P. Kev :’-(

  154. 240 ka___ October 16, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Thanks for a wonderful story, you have captured Kev and Al’s lives in a fascinating way!

  155. 241 Ashlyn October 16, 2009 at 11:30 pm

As Alice looks over the horizon on the virge of her new life I hope that everyone can learn from this a new valueable lesson. Things may change people will pass away but life goes on and with that I am very happy to say that in His kingdom things will only get better! Amen

  156. 242 Lis October 17, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I was just linked this story and read it from start to end. Amazing work!

  157. 243 CK October 17, 2009 at 11:47 pm

Hmm, did Zed call Alice in the end, or the other way around…?

I think this is a good place to end things. As much as I’d like to see Alice happy, at least her life is looking up, if not completely better. (Too bad Kev had to die for that to happen…)

I’m going to download them. 🙂 I’m not sure if I’ll play them. Maybe I’ll just stick them in one of my pre-existing neighbourhoods and then drop by on them occasionally. I’m not sure. It’d be cool to just see them around town.

Especially now that you’re done, I think you should put some links up, to other Sims story blogs. You have such a large and loyal readership that simply posting an URL would get any blog hundreds, if not thousands, of views. I don’t know if you already read any Sims blogs, but there are plenty high-quality stories out there in the community that deserve to be seen. You have the power to show them. Yes, I have a personal blog. No, I’m not going to plug my URL here. I just think you have an ability and that you should exercise it, if only a little bit.

  158. 244 Courtney October 18, 2009 at 3:01 am

I actually downloaded Alice as she “Started her own life.”
I did not donate ALL of her money to charity, and she gained a happy enough mood to start a job at City Hall (don’t ask me how it happened, it just did and i’m happy). She’s on level 6 of her job and is soon to get a husband, Styles. She cleaned out all of the weeds in her spare time, and when she had enough money, she bought a bed. And it only went up from there. She now has a home. It may be small… But it’s what she’s always wanted 🙂

  159. 245 RawkabyeNukeface October 18, 2009 at 3:59 am

That was a great ending. 😀 I’m certainly going to download her. 🙂 I want to build her a well-deserved future. 🙂

I’ve been reading this for a while and just wanted to take time tonight to say Thank You. I appreciate you sharing this story with us and allowing us to experience your journey along with Alice and Kev. It was very entertaining and very moving. Thanks again.

  164. 251 ScarletStarz October 18, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Wow.. This was great. I have followed Alice’s heartbreaking story since it started. I feel that i must continue her story. I have downloaded her. As of right now she decided to join the culinary career rack. Shes only on level 2 but is happy. she has fnally found someone that seems to care for her. But alas he doesnt. Alice is pregnant. the only thing that man wanted was her body. She thought he loved her,, heck she was starving for love but he cant give her any. I feel bad for her daughter or son but at least the two will have someone to love…

  165. 252 Miko October 18, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Wow but roburky writes like a woman

  166. 254 Blackflame619 October 18, 2009 at 11:58 pm

This was amazing. Good work. This is the end to a legacy. Good luck alice. and farewell kev. =)

  167. 255 Abstract Jack October 19, 2009 at 4:39 am

That was one of the greatest tales ever told. This ought to be published in a BOOK. Using the Sims’ actual reactions to forward the plot was brilliant by the way.

  168. 256 Bri♥ October 19, 2009 at 6:26 am

I want to say that i loved your story! It was wonderful. I decided to download adult Alice as well and she is now my favorite sim to play. At first i got her some extra cash by finding and selling rocks around town and built her a small home. Then she eventually met a nice man named Christopher Steel and moved in with him, then married him. Now they have 6 beautiful children, 2 sets of twins (2 boys, 2 girls) and a little girl and a boy, named Keith, Wendy, Kelly, Sarah, Ryan, and Kyle. Oddly enough two of them came out with Grey hair, and 1 with blonde hair, despite both of their parents having brown hair.
Alice decided she wanted to quit her job, so she did, then she wanted to join the Police force, so she did that too. Her and her husband are both police officers now. Kev has a little spot out by Alice’s garden and haunts the house from time to time. He mostly just watches TV and sleeps in his oldest grandson’s bed. Since Alice was doing pretty good for herself i changed her Unlucky and Loser traits to Family Oriented and Green Thumb, since she loves to garden and loves her family. I tried to do what you did and just let her chose her own life and she’s doing great. She will become an Elder in a few days and she has 5 toddlers and a child. Don’t know how she is going to manage, but i’m sure she’ll do fine as she is a terrific mother.

Thank you once again for taking your time to write this story. I have been following it since the near beginning and while i am sad to see it end, i am glad that i am able to continue her story.

    Hey,
it’s rogerdodger777, the maker of In His Own World.
I just thought I’d like to mention that my new blog Sims 3 Big Brother is up and running. It’s a bit of light-hearted fun and you get to vote for the winner! check it out at sims3bigbrother.wordpress.com
If the author of the blog doesn’t feel comfortable with me shamelessly advertising my blog here please feel free to delete it… alternatively if they want to add it to their blogroll that would be great!
    Thanks!

Wow, Alice’s father dying really hit me hard. She never got a chance to reconcile with Kev… and he died on that park bench. At least he wasn’t alone. I’m a bit teary eyed, Robin.

  171. 259 lovecoloredglasses October 19, 2009 at 8:55 am

This has been an amazing story. Thanks so much for posting it!

  172. 260 ♥Mikayla♥ October 19, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Hi Everyone! I have a blog that I have been working on for a while now, I have quite a few updates. It’s about a girl named Clair who has a somewhat very interesting life, she does have some big changes. And, I am going to release my new blog soon. But, if anyone is interested, you can click on my name of just go to this link. Either way, it will take you to the same place. 😛 http://anothersims3story.wordpress.com/2009/07/20/introduction/

  173. 261 Luna October 19, 2009 at 7:54 pm

While many have shamelessly advertised as we all call it, I’ve started a new story that I believe is very ready for the audience it desires.

It is similar to Alice and Kev, but different in many ways. A single father of two kids, they are homeless technically, but are living in an abandoned garage. Jon ended up on Sunset Valley’s shore with his two children in a deflated life raft. He doesn’t remember anything that lead up to the event, and the situation has caused him and his children to become neurotic, along with a ton of other unhelpful traits.

    http://rollingsurf.wordpress.com/

I hope to see you there!

  174. 262 Jael October 19, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I have thoroughly enjoyed this blog. I hope that you decide to write more in the future.

  175. 263 CowyChan October 20, 2009 at 12:29 am

Ow, I found Alice and Kev today… I looooved the whole story… It made me think about my own gameplay… Haha, somehow I’m sure I’m gonna put some more heart the next time I play… Apart from that, it was an excellent “experiment” the one you made… 🙂
Congratulations, you’ve had us all hitched to Alice and Kev.

  176. 264 Joyce October 20, 2009 at 4:57 am

thanks for the great story, I downloaded Alice and Kev and put them into my town as non playing characters. For a man who disliked children he certainly has been busy producing them with one of the Lin sisters LOL. One of my topics of gossip was my character announcing his engagement and stating “I’m glad its not me.” Gotta love it!

  177. 265 faworthy October 20, 2009 at 7:33 am

Well done dude. Thanks for the blog. It was very interesting, and entertaining. I never thought I’d get pathos from a sims story, but here it is.

    Cheers!

  178. 266 southchiks October 21, 2009 at 4:26 pm

You turned out to be a really weird guy. From disappearing for a month, pretending to be a female, and a crappy ending. Just weird. I suppose it is best you pretended to be a girl, most people won’t criticize a female’s story.

i almost cried in this story soooo manny times :”) its just so good i cant explain it in words :”D =>.<=

    • 271 Luna October 22, 2009 at 12:56 am

It’s not in the game, I just made it a part of the story. I like to make the sims seem a bit more real in my story, even if that means making something up that isn’t part of the game.

  185. 276 roBurky October 23, 2009 at 9:00 am

I’ve figured out what was causing the rogue comments floating to the bottom of the list. Turns out, it’s all my fault.

The site is set to only allow comments to three ‘levels’ of replies. So after someone has replied to another comment, and you reply to that reply, nobody else can reply directly to you. Except it doesn’t prevent me from replying through my admin interface, which creates a comment that can’t be displayed where it is supposed to be, so gets shunted to the end. And then any replies to that comment get put in the same limbo.

I’ve deleted the offending replies again, and made a vow to only reply to comments using the normal page instead of my admin interface in future. Apologies to those that got replies deleted.

  186. 277 Alex October 24, 2009 at 12:21 am

  188. 279 Sarah October 25, 2009 at 1:37 am

lovely; you should do another sims 3 story; this was great; it’s inspired me to make my own homeless sims 3 game; quick question; how did you get them to have so little money at the beginning? i’m pretty sure you built a ‘park’ on a vacant lot, but i think you’d have to have used the largest one and spend all their money on plants and such. i’m definitely gonna download alice and see how much of a good life i can give her in my game.

  189. 280 Jenna October 25, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Robin, I would really like to thank you for this story. This might sound sort of odd but whenever I was feeling down in the dumps I went onto this website and read about Alice and Kev. Throughout all of my problems and issues I kept thinking to myself, suck it up Jenna..things could be much worse. There are people out there living this story and I think it’s wonderful that you were able to open the eyes of many people and allow them to connect to this story through a computer game. I really do thank you, and I hope you continue to write other stories as well, you are a very talented writer. I have also decided based on this website to start my own blog, but from sims 2 (personal choice). I wish you much luck and hope in the future. Thank you.

  190. 281 Kevin October 25, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Hmm next post “Alice’s Mom” and a view of the past(which is yet to be created)?

  191. 282 worsiedog October 26, 2009 at 12:33 pm

You are truely an inspiration. I loved your story.

I am sure that you never realised when you first hovered your fingers over the keyboard, the impact your words would leave on a society that went beyond the borders of mere bloggers.

    Well done!

  192. 283 Derek Lee October 28, 2009 at 2:01 am

  193. 285 Nosferatu October 30, 2009 at 3:01 am

Dang… This made me look at the sims 3 in a whoole new way, you are a great author and I hope you’ll be writing a few stories i’ll be able to buy in the bookshop, you have some real talent!

Afterall, you gave alice her charm, her ‘humanity’ and when reading i could download her and use in my own game, i got a feeling that it be wrong to use her in my neighbourhood…

she’s way too real after reading all this and i really hope you’ll make a sequel

  194. 286 ??? October 30, 2009 at 9:40 pm

I downloaded the two (teenager Alice one) and Kev died… while Alice had 2 children?? (Twins, I guess.) Ouch.

Poor Alice… I’m baffled at how a game can be used to make such a heartwrenching tale..<3

  199. 291 Deryk November 2, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Brilliant story Robin! Thanks for all your hard work and determination to see it through to the end. I downloaded Alice and Kev Bindiver. In my alternate reality Kev is not a nice guy at all. He’s even gone back to a life of crime and got a job as a criminal. He hasn’t got caught by the police yet. In his off-time he’s his usual cranky self, insulting people, making trouble, I have him go around and look in people’s windows, rummage through their bins, then kick them over when he’s done.

Sims wake up the next morning dismayed…that yet again their bins have been dumped and trash strewn all over the yard, and that their neighbors are discovering this too; a chore which usually falls upon the children of the families to clean up.

Poor young Alice is always unhappy and in a terrible mood, much like she was as a child in your story. Kev often verbally abuses her. But she tries to make do with sneaking a picnic lunch, taking a dip in the community pool or gym pool and showering after. But sleep for her is uncomfortable on that old park bench. She has been invited over to friends house after school, but no sleepovers yet.

I have extended game time running too (999 days or whatever it is)), so it should be a good long time for them to play.

Anyways, you get the brilliant credit for making such terrific and dynamic Sims. Well done!

PS: And thanks for your making us all aware of homelessness. It’s even rougher for homeless people in northern climates what with Winter setting in. Imagine not having a home when it’s below 0′ (C or F it’s still freezing!)!

      Thanks again Robin!

Amazing. I loved reading this story!

  201. 294 SuziMae November 3, 2009 at 5:17 am

I started your story a long while ago and when you took a break it was a sad day. But this ending was beyond any expectations I could have had. It was so wonderfully amazing. I really enjoyed Alice and Kev.

  202. 295 Shawn S.J. November 3, 2009 at 6:22 am

I just discovered this today and it is truly remarkable how well you have managed to reach out and bring attention to this. I won’t go into a huge political speal here but this has opened my eyes (wider, they were never shut) to people like this in the real world and has made me more interested in helping them. It has also inspired me to do something similair, I probably won’t publish mine though because there won’t be as much drama, but I could see how it would be fun to start with a character like Alice but get her to be one of the richest sims in town. Anyway I do plan on trying to help charities in the future. In this country, if you don’t want to be homeless you shouldn’t be (not blaming them, just that I want to make it more aparent that people can make something for themselves, just a little push from charities 🙂
Thank you so much for this great tale. Video Games may not be an art but I think you have proven that they are a medium of artistic talent, which you have in great quantities. I’d love to see a different story played out in the sims.

  203. 296 maestory November 4, 2009 at 1:01 am

A moving and inspirational story. Very well done.
Long live Alice and Kev. (:

I could only hope my story can live up to yours.

  204. 298 Cilla November 4, 2009 at 3:24 am

I am so sad to see Alice go but what a way to end it. Her life should be an example to use all. The way she still found hope and security to be kind to others in spite of all she’d been through. And she still treated Kev pretty decently considering everything that went down. Thanks roBurky, for sharing this inspiring story with us all.

  210. 304 SparcMan November 10, 2009 at 10:20 am

    Bravo. Great story.
I think what really sells this story is that in many ways it’s so real that it very likely mirrors the life of someone in real life. That being said, to the real-life “Alice and Kev” somewhere out in the world, best of luck to you.
I wonder how much of these events were controlled by you and how much was governed by the character’s personalities…

  211. 305 Catemate November 12, 2009 at 4:10 am

    Bravo, an amazing story 🙂

Wow. I read this entire saga for the last two days, it is wonderful.

Kev, I feel sorry for him; I really did wish he could find peace in his life.

And I’m glad Alice could prosper.

  214. 308 Maggie's Mind November 16, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I’ll miss you Alice and Kev.

    A final goodbye to you.

  219. 313 Ko November 21, 2009 at 9:04 am

Aww, I had forgotten about this over the summer and now I’ve come back to see it ended… Very sad to see it go, but it really wouldn’t be the same without Kev. I think you made the right decision to leave it here, on an odd but uplifting note. Very fitting.

Thanks for the wonderful story. 🙂 If I ever upgrade from TS2 to TS3 I’ll definitely be adding Alice to my neighborhood.

  220. 314 Carson November 21, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Loved the whole story. Although I’m embarrased to admit it…at the end I was a little teared up! It was great. Thanks for that 🙂

    ——————————————————————-
*raises glass of wine* To Kevin Bin Diver, may he rest in pieces.
To Alice, may she and her future husband, whoever he may be, have a long and happy marriage. Theirs is a story whose telling to the masses will be missed, but shall live on in the hard drives and hearts of many a fan. *drinks wine*
    Oooh, now I’m woozy…

  225. 319 ChuChi November 27, 2009 at 4:57 pm

I loved this story!! I wish it wasn’t over but I understand why you did end it. Thanks for giving us the option to download Alice.

  226. 320 Jade November 28, 2009 at 2:11 am

    this is beautiful 🙂

I just read the whole thing in one sitting – I felt my eyes welling up at some points!

    Thankyou for the Alice download.

I’m tempted to try a homeless family myself in Sims 3, although I’m sure I can’t beat your storyline.

    RIP Kev

  227. 321 Karly November 28, 2009 at 1:24 pm

A truly lovely and subtly told tale even if it was a few captions and photos. I was moved by it on occasion and I applaud you for telling it.

  228. 322 Setari November 30, 2009 at 12:03 am

Best. Blog. Ever. I’m sad to see it go. Hopefully we get some more on Alice, later.

  229. 323 Rolyn November 30, 2009 at 8:46 am

I loved the ending. Great job! I made up my own epilogue with Alice marrying Zedidiah and having a son named Kev to symbolize her possible forgiveness and to show that she’s moved on with her life.

  230. 324 Ginseng December 2, 2009 at 5:28 am

    It got to me.

  231. 325 Shkaev December 5, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Thanks, that was a really great story.

  232. 326 xAudrix December 5, 2009 at 6:45 pm

I love this blog. You did a great job at it. But while everyone tries out Alice for themselves, why don’t you continue your story? I mean, you aren’t really ending your sims here. There’s not way. I’m sure a lot of us would like to see how YOU carry on Alice’s life. Wondering if she ever gets to be with Zed or not, or if she gets her own house, gets married, has kids? I mean, what’s next on your list? I believe many of us would love to know.

    • 327 roBurky December 6, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I haven’t actually touched Alice’s game since I ended the story. If and when I do play her life further to a significant degree, it’s likely I’ll put up an epilogue post or two.

      • 328 sHaDoWhEaRt December 7, 2009 at 12:57 am

You really should… it’d make a lot of us feel better ;/

      • 329 sHaDoWhEaRt December 7, 2009 at 12:58 am

that came out wrong o.O i just want to know what happens. didnt mean offense.

      • 330 fronda December 9, 2009 at 4:48 am

Wow it feels like I’m talking to a blog master…anyway, it would be much appreciated if you were to make an epilouge. I guess I just want to know what happens between Alice and Zed. Has a nice ring to it huh? Anyway, that is my 2 cents.

  233. 331 t--top December 10, 2009 at 7:40 am

i suppose that i am a little late getting to the party here, but i felt it would still be appropriate to say that i’ve appreciated the story that you’ve recorded. the experiment itself was rather intriguing, but i really enjoyed the way you presented it. certain sections formulated from wide-shots of the environment, the extreme close-ups and concise comments when suitable. sometimes i feel that i missed much of the action that was left out of the tale, but i assume the extensive editing to have achieved the intended effect much more effectively than if the story had included more information. i do find myself anxious to learn more of alice’s life from here on as only you could tell. the drama unfolds here as if i had turned on the television to catch a finely produced show. very well done, roburky.

  234. 332 bonzoWhale December 12, 2009 at 8:50 am

Brilliant. Thank you for this story.

I think it’s pretty sad that Kev’s death means an improvement to Alice’s days to come… but such is life, I guess. I am amazed at the social depth this game features.

  235. 333 Hugotheninjapie December 15, 2009 at 2:28 pm

(Sorry, i am not very good at English) Wow! Just wanted to post a lil comment :S to tell you how beautiful the story was :)and that i bought sims 3 shortly after reading this story

    Thanks 😀

  236. 334 Nihtgenga December 18, 2009 at 3:35 am

Hilarious yet heartbreaking at the same time. This is sheer brilliance.

  237. 335 Brains December 19, 2009 at 6:47 am

I just spent the last 2 hours reading this whole blog, and I love it. You are an amazing writer! I hope you keep on writing sims 3 blogs like these!

  238. 336 Dolphinz2121 December 19, 2009 at 2:07 pm

I played Alice and Kev on my computer. I made Kev… um… “disappear”, moved Alice into a house, had her date Zed, and they ended up married.

  239. 337 jigsawxrobot December 21, 2009 at 11:15 pm

this story was beautiful. you’ve inspired me to make my own story(: http://melandalexx.wordpress.com/

  240. 338 Sciffy Circo December 24, 2009 at 6:01 pm

w00t, I got World Adventures for Xmas! Can’t wait to take my downloaded Alice on a vacation from Kev! Or maybe she’ll take Kev with, and leave him there, FAR away from her! Maybe he’ll meet some exotic Chinese lady, or erotic French lady, who will fulfill his wish of being a heartbreaker. Maybe Alice will pick up a culinary career and learn a recipe or two in France. Maybe instead of living in De’Nile (denial), they can visit Egypt, and Kev can die, and be turned into a mummy.

    Oh, the possibilities! 😀

  241. 339 Greyve December 29, 2009 at 8:10 am

    Nice ending.

Is it just me, or does it seem like almost no one liked Kev until he died? o.o

  242. 340 Stephanie December 29, 2009 at 5:55 pm

My Alice has found comfort in exploring (via World Adventures). She’s been using her time abroad to discover herself and gain confidence (and she actually likes sleeping in the tents). She’s earned enough to become partner in the bookstore (which funds her trips, along with her job at the Bistro) and she’s developed an affinity for fine & exotic food. Her traits have changed somewhat and she has commitment issues but she’s dating Don Lothario, since she knows he won’t be asking her to commit. Of course her pregnancy is going to interfere with her exploring…

    Thanks again for Alice 🙂

You should make a new post and encourage everyone to nominate you too.
Why? Because people are really missing out!

    Good luck!

  246. 344 Mariel January 15, 2010 at 12:34 am

Wow. I followed this in the summer and suddenly remembered to check how it ends. It is a perfect place to end the story, it made me cry with both happiness and sadness. Because it is not just any story.
I think what you have accomplished is amazing, a great piece of art. And I’ve seen a lot of art. This is very special.

    Thank you for this sims.

    Genius!! xx

  249. 347 Iker January 18, 2010 at 7:25 am

The tale of a somehow sequestered girl with her father restraining her from moving forward in the world, ending in the death of the girl’s father which makes her sad but at the same time grants her freedom…

…man, this is a little too similar to Repo! The Genetic Opera to be considered a coincidence…

  250. 348 Kate January 25, 2010 at 2:19 am

I was just listening to Viva La Gloria (Little Girl) by Green Day. I swear, it’s Alice’s theme song! Do you agree? The lyrics are:

    Little girl, little girl
    Why are you crying?
Inside your restless soul, your heart is dying
    Little one, little one
    Your soul is purging
    Of love and razor blades
    Your blood is surging

    Run away
From the river to the street
And find yourself with your face in the gutter
You’re a stray for the salvation army
There is no place like home
When you got no place to go

    Little girl, little girl
    Your life is calling
The charlatans and saints of your abandon
    Little one, little one
    The sky is falling
Your lifeboat of deception is now sailing
In the wake all the way
    No rhyme or reason
    Your bloodshot eyes
Will show your heart of treason
    Little girl, little girl
    You dirty liar
    You’re just a junkie
    Preaching to the choir

    Run away
From the river to the street
And find yourself with your face in the gutter
You’re a stray for the salvation army
There is no place like home
When you got no place to go

    The traces of blood
    Always follow you home
    Like the mascara tears
    From your getaway
    (Gloria)
    You’re walking with blisters
    And running with shears
    So unholy
    Sister of grace

    Run away
From the river to the street
And find yourself with your face in the gutter
You’re a stray for the salvation army
There is no place like home

If I knew how to make YouTube videos, I would soo make one called “Viva La Alice (Little Girl).” Maybe I will someday…

  251. 349 Alice B January 27, 2010 at 2:16 am

This may just be another overlooked comment and this story may be something of little meaning to some people, who also pass it by without a care, but no matter what some games may offer, there are real people out there just like Alice. Although I may share her name, I am lucky enough to not have to share her story. Theses artifical people have the ability to share life lessons, so try to be kind to others and treat them how you would want them to treat you, with compassion.

Well, I just need to advertise about a really cool contest on The Sims Wiki (http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sims_Wiki). It’s an ugly-Sim contest, for The Sims 3, in which you make an ugly Sim and enter them in the contest (http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/The_Sims_Wiki:User_Created_Contests/Ugliest_Player-Created_Sim). The rules are on that page. To enter, you must make an account, which is free and connects you with the ability to edit and improve pages about Sims like Agnes Crumplebottom, Bella Goth, Malcolm Landgraab, and WAAY more! I’m an admin on this wiki, and my username is Bleeh (my friend and I created this contest), and you can leave me a message in the comments section or on the wiki. Thanks!

  263. 361 Bonnie February 27, 2010 at 4:27 pm

When I first read Alice and Kev, I wanted to download them but was leery of adding anything non EA to my game. After talking with some friends, I did. I put them on the little lot near the park where chess tournaments are held. I never once entered their lives though it was very tempting to direct my Sims to interact with them. I continued to observe when suddenly Alice disappeared, taken by the Social Worker I suppose. Kev began to cut through my Sims yard and I followed him to find out why.

Alice was living with the couple next door. When they died she must have asked him to move in, because he did. They left her their money and both she and Kev had nice cars. I’m pretty sure Alice worked at the bookstore. Kev became my Sims boss at the restaurant (WTF!). Things flowed much as they did in the original story, Kev ranted and raved a lot but I saw him berate Alice less and less. After he died I saw something amazing.

Alice walked past my Sims house carrying a toddler. She never married, but her son did and has two children. Yesterday, Alice died and I felt such a loss I had tears in my eyes. Her family still lives next door, but I still feel in awe of the no interference experience. I leave this family alone.

I knit for charity and one of my circles supplies hats and mittens for a homeless shelter. I think of these characters with every item I send. Thank you Ro, for the inspiration.

Oh my gods, I almost never cry about things I see in films or whatever, because I know they’re not real (I have a surprisingly good grip on reality for a crazy person) but this actually brought tears to my eyes. I love the sims games, and it makes me happy that the franchise can be used for a charitable cause.

I don’t play Sims 3. And I don’t intend to. Mainly because my computer isn’t too great. But throughout this story, there were several moments that tempted me to. You did a great job creating a story like this out of the simple actions of these virtual characters. Good work, with the story and the shelter donations 🙂

I really enjoyed reading this, I wish you would continue. Good Job, you have convinced me to purchase the game.

  273. 371 Laura April 16, 2010 at 2:57 pm

    RIP, Kev. Wonderful story!

  274. 372 Kelly April 17, 2010 at 7:24 am

A moving ending to an amazing emergent story. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

  275. 373 HayashiKaiji April 22, 2010 at 8:22 pm

I really enjoyed reading this story. It’s really awesome.

  276. 374 ComicsNix April 23, 2010 at 3:10 am

That’s…I don’t have words. I found this blog today, and finished reading almost one hour latter. Damn, you made me cry you know? When Kev died, I felt my heart a little small, and when I saw Alice with her hand on her chest…I put my hand over my eyes, to contain the tears. Seriously, this was the most touching story I ever read in years. Who thought game characters could carry such weight an emotional deepness? You did a great job, you are very talented.

You are studying game design, don’t you? That’s awesome! I’m in a process to change courses, I’m going for computer sciences, and I have to say, you inspired me a lot more now to do games. I already had this passion and all, but seeing your work really gave me a fuel to do different and cool stuff.

I was even thinking about writing a fanfiction about Alice and Kev lives. I hope you don’t mind.

Thanks for your patience and dedication. Not everyone in this life have the guts and passion to do something free to share with everyone.

Okay, let me go now, I have a charity donation to do. 🙂

aww i wanted alice and zedidia to get married… but i may download alice

  278. 376 Yelitza April 30, 2010 at 5:53 am

Thank you so much for this beautiful story. While my own Sims 3 story isn’t quite as emotional, I have to say that yours has really inspired me to keep on creating.

  279. 377 Pythia May 6, 2010 at 2:37 am

I am genuinely sad to see this story end, and I am going to put some serious thought into getting Sims 3. This looked fantastic.

  280. 378 GetRellx May 10, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Amazing story! I am serious when I say that this story changed my way to look at poverty and charity. I´m you continue writing, cause what you have done is just plain awesome. Good luck to Alice and thanks for this awesome story!

YOU CAN’T ENF IT THERE! I’M GUTTED!!!!!!!!

I wanted to see her get married and have a nice house and be looked after by a man with a good job, and have some children!

Not got Sims 3, but will hopefully be investing soon!

On a serious note, excellent job on the story, really loved it! Thanks for writing it!

I downloaded Alice and Kev and Zedadias into my game. I love Alice so much and I’ve lead her into a pretty happy home. I’ve been keeping track on my deivnat art if anyone’s interested. It’s not Fantastic, but I think it’s interesting to see all the ways Alice turns out in differt games. In my game her life’s pretty hectic, she has three infants and two toddlers =)

    Anyway here’s my deiviant art:

This has to be one of the most engaging Sim stories I have ever read. It made me cry twice and it made me feel sorry for computer people. I never thought it was possible, but you have done it. Great work.

  284. 382 Lindsay May 18, 2010 at 3:01 pm

It took me way too long to find the time to finish the story that you’ve created and shared with us. It was heartbreaking. You’ve taken the Sims, a game that many use to act out the life that they want to have, and you’ve used it to show us how things can be in reality.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  285. 383 Carla Francisco May 22, 2010 at 5:16 pm

    Brilliant work, roBurky!
I’m a big fan and avid player of The Sims (1 through 3 with all the expansions and packages) – and I enjoyed this immensely.
I read the whole blog in one sitting – and all I can say is: BRILLIANT WORK and congratulations! 🙂

  286. 384 Nyn May 25, 2010 at 10:08 pm

I just stumbed across your story. I’ve come across lots in the last few years and never read them through to the end. Yours had me hooked from the beginning. I loved it. Thank you for taking the time to make it and I hope you make some more!

  287. 385 lm May 26, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Thanks a million for this story – it was wonderful. I’ve just downloaded homeless child Alice and Kev and look forward to seeing if I can make them happy.

  288. 386 alexspoom13 May 26, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Awesome story, RoBurky. You get surprisingly attached to the characters, which I think is a great and important thing for a story 🙂

You inspired me to start my own Sims 3 blog, in fact.
It’s about my longest-running family (Almost a year now woop-woop) and it’s actually quite dramatic.

After a long running murder mystery, things have finally been unwravelled and events are set to take a turn for the worse as the killer contemplates their next move…

Im mad. I can’t find a single home for Alice and Kev! even just a lot! I will have to cheat and get them some $$$$$$$$!!

  290. 388 Psyche June 7, 2010 at 7:40 pm

    Oooooh I loved it!
    Congrats!

It makes me crazy for playing TS3 again!!!

  292. 390 Kay June 16, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Omg, your story is amazing! You get really attatched to the characters and all. I cried the last two pages. Truly wonderful ❤ You really should do something similair, awesome to read 🙂

  293. 391 TurboPunz June 19, 2010 at 1:14 am

Somebody submitted your story to Stumble, and I’m glad they did.

    Quote from Selflessness:
“What does it mean when a character you’ve created makes you re-examine your own life through their astonishing selflessness?”
I don’t know. What does it mean when a character somebody else created makes you rethink your own life choices?

  294. 392 Zack June 22, 2010 at 5:29 am

Fantastic story! I loved every bit of it!

  295. 393 Rodrigo X July 4, 2010 at 8:58 pm

I… I… am speechless! This story started a year ago and it’s still here. I layed down on my chair and read every single paragraph of this story. I simply love it. Those digital fictional characters touched me… 😥
One good birthday present for me (I turn 12 on 20th July) would be a continuation for this.

    *(»First Post of July«)*

  296. 394 TheStory July 6, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Amazing story, I haven’t been touched by a story like that in years. I teared up at the end, so sad :(.

  297. 395 Tal July 6, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Perhaps the only blog in the world that shows godly ethics for people who burn their Sims. It shows the The Sims game series makes one thing for the Sims that no one else can (other than humans) can have. Emotions. Showing the story in a deep ethical way that being homeless isn’t the end of the world. It shows that we can be hardened by our life-or-death efforts in being homeless. Alice donating to people like herself shows that they aren’t completely doomed and that there’s more dieing people out there that need her money. Kev is the person who boot-camps her to have ethical decisions, even if Kev dosen’t know it. Please, anyone that reads this comment should give grace to the people who made this. This is encouraging me to buy the game and to start a new generation of Alice and Kev (that is, if you don’t want to do another blog.) Thank you for letting me spend 15 mins reading the storys. It made me get more emotional about the main characters and gave me more ideas for The Sims 3. Thank you.

  298. 396 Malin July 16, 2010 at 10:24 pm

I love this story so much that i downloded Alice and Zedadias. They got married and they got 6 kids, 1 adopted. And she is happy all the time now 😛

  299. 397 Joel July 17, 2010 at 2:58 am

I found this today, read it, and loved it.
    Thankyou.
You’ve inspired me to look at the Sims 3 in a new light. :>

  300. 398 wizardbaker July 20, 2010 at 10:20 pm

    A fitting end…great story…good work

  301. 399 Grahav July 22, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Read this in a half-hour, loved it and loved her so much.

    May Kev rot in hell.

  302. 400 Monkeyman July 24, 2010 at 5:03 am

Great story! I bought Sims 3 because of this (although I had thought about it before and liked the other games). You should do more things like this!

  303. 401 Jess July 24, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Wow that was a great story!

  304. 402 Mia July 26, 2010 at 7:13 am

    Loved it!

There was a tear, and a smile,
and a laugh, once in a while.
It was enjoyable, and very fun,
and to you, a big well done!
For a story, that’s quite so deep,
    yet sensitive and complete.
    I wonder what’s to come,
In this sim world, that you run.

    – Mia x.

  305. 403 WolfieBaby July 30, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Just found this today, read the whole thing over the last hour…

Breathtaking. Inspiring in multiple ways. Thank you, roBucky.

The great thing about discovering this when it’s finished is that I get to travel with Alice and Kev through their lives without having to wait more than a second for the next episode.

I kinda feel the pain of the real-timers, panting for the next day to come so they could see where Kev crashed last night.

Art and literature in fifty clicks.

  306. 404 Jeff August 16, 2010 at 2:36 am

I got this link off a forum post, absolutely amazing. A picture does paint a thousand words, the storytelling along with the Sims’ expressions was all that was needed to be carried away with the story. I sniffed a few times, and for a blog post about made up characters, that says a lot.

  307. 405 Catrin August 21, 2010 at 7:33 pm

    Really great. This is amazing.

  308. 406 kansine August 27, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Hi… I hope it’s ok if I mention here, that I’ve started a new story 🙂 It’s kind of a mystery story (i.e. wierd story) XD about a teenage girl moving to a strange little village. If you’re interested, check it out! 🙂

Hi! So people are still commenting here? 🙂 I’d just like to mention, that I loved this story so long as it lasted…
And it inspired me to start my own stories! 😀
My current one is kind of a mystery story with already 19 quite long chapters… and I’m very excited about writing it! 🙂 Just that I still have so few readers…
so anyone interested of sims 3 stories, please check it out! 🙂 🙂

I’ve never been so emotionally attatched to sims… I think you’ve just convinced me to give the Sims 3 another try. That was an amazing story in ways that I don’t know how to respond..
    Heh, I guess, Thank you.

  314. 412 Saz October 22, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Amazing, it makes me wonder if what this story would be like if it was a movie

  315. 413 J miggz October 23, 2010 at 11:54 pm

beautiful. Simply touching. I felt so attached to these virtual characters. I would actually pay to see a movie based on this!

  316. 414 dvolt October 27, 2010 at 10:46 pm

that was the most awesome thing ever, thanks

  317. 415 Alexander November 2, 2010 at 3:36 am

    Very touching.

But actually, in this game (unlike real life) it’s not that big deal to be homeless. Game is nearly socialistic – you can get nearly everything for free on community lots, including showering (in gym), education and Internet access (library), athletic training and food (picnic baskets, fruit gathering). Only problem is with beds, but you can just make some friends and couch surf. Or make Sim with Inappropriate trait and couch surf just anyone:)

    • 416 Whitewings December 26, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Although it’s not hard for a homeless Sim to get by in the game, it’s very nearly impossible to get ahead. Even getting a child or teen’s homework done is hard, hard, hard, and forget about raising a toddler well.

  318. 418 Jamessuperfun November 7, 2010 at 5:20 pm

That was just…… i’m speechless. Im sorry but that is the best blog I have read in my entire life. You NEED to do a new character or continue, please. E-mail me. This is really incredible.

  319. 419 Yasmine November 12, 2010 at 1:50 am

… I LOVED THIS STORY! i have to say this! this occupied my time for awhile, when people read this, i think EA should thank you because you are an inspiration to start playing TS3! now people will actually want to follow through with their families and carefully pick their peoples traits! 😀 ❤ ❤ ❤

I tryed to mate her and that one dude, he and shirley were SOs, she was staying with him still, they hated each other, anita became better friends with alice, eventually that one dud and shirley got married, and shirley told alice to GTFO, so she stayed at anitas, and eventually they got married.

  323. 423 D November 28, 2010 at 9:03 am

Absolutely wonderfully done! I’m starting a homeless family myself. A charismatic gold digger wife and a gardener.:) Found this through stumbleupon 😀

  324. 424 Ryan November 29, 2010 at 2:50 am

Masterful. Have you posted this on thesims3.com yet? If not, you should! I’m sure some of the mods would feature it somehow, since this truly is genius and original and emotionally impacting (I nearly cried!).

As I wrote in a different comment, I love what you’re doing with the charities. You are truly a magnificent soul and I pray that you prosper.

Beautifully done, and you have yourself a subscriber. Make more, I beg you! 😀

  325. 425 Valerie December 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I don’t even play the sims, haven’t in years, but this alone has given me the urge to try it. Makes you wonder if sometimes we surprise God, in both good and bad ways. Thanks for sharing.

That was a wonderful story and I admire you roBurky for raising awareness for homelessness. You deserve admiration, even more than Alice.

  335. 435 Donna January 2, 2011 at 4:58 am

Really loved this story. Simply told with meanings! and well put out with the screen shots.

  336. 436 PinkBomb January 2, 2011 at 8:11 pm

I loved this story. It’s really enjoyable to read and I hope you write more stories in the future! 🙂

  337. 437 Jim Meh January 4, 2011 at 1:37 am

So what have other people had for their endings?
I’m going to have Alice persue a relationship with Zed (seems like something she was always going to do).

  338. 438 Minty January 7, 2011 at 12:34 pm

    This was amazing.

  339. 439 Erin January 11, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Ah, this is my third time reading the story. Really amazing. 😀

  342. 442 PurpleChicita February 10, 2011 at 2:49 am

Wow that is a lot of comments. I really liked Alice and Kev’s story! If I were Alice (and digital) I would have cheered when Kev died. He was a mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean person. I dislike him very much. I declare you a nemesis Kev!

  343. 443 Bruno February 10, 2011 at 6:17 pm

I’m not really one for emotional stuff, but I genuinely cried at this. Well told, well illustrated, and it prompted me to send half my paycheck to a homeless shelter. (Not much, but I can afford to spare it.)

Thank you for a story that should really be told everywhere, not just online.

  344. 444 Kevin February 19, 2011 at 3:30 pm

As a nurse in training, I have had experience of working with people in the homeless service and i couldn’t help but find this story touching. brilliantly done, thank you.

  345. 445 Mikaela February 21, 2011 at 10:24 pm

RIP Kev 😦 I just read the entire story of Alice and Kev. It was very happy, but very sad.

You have a very unique, talented way of writing. I laughed several times while reading this. Keep up the good work. Hopefully you’ll make more Sim stories?

  346. 446 Adam February 22, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Awwwhh… A touching tale from beginning to end. Thank you, mysterious Sims 3 player, for changing my life 🙂

  347. 447 Elvin March 1, 2011 at 11:59 pm

Brilliant story, I’m glad I took the time to read it. I’ll be thinking about this for a while, I’m sure.

  348. 448 izzywo March 8, 2011 at 3:01 am

I found this through StumbleUpon and I sat here reading, fully enthralled, for more than two hours. Incredible job roburky, thank you

I really loved reading this and i think you’ve done a great job:-)

  350. 450 Tabitha♥ April 29, 2011 at 12:24 am

This was published on my birthday! xD
    What a nice-but sad-birthday present.

  351. 451 Anonymous May 6, 2011 at 11:42 pm

I genuinely feel different about everything I have so far perceived about life. When I was 8 years old my best chance of family passed with my father. I’m now 16 and man I know it’s going to be tough when I’m and adult. I have family to support me but I refuse to even fall back on them for the way I’ve been raised. I have been isolated from them. I wasn’t given love but more like financial support and when that’s gone I’m gonna be similar to Alice when Kev passed. So I am going to pass on your download offer cause I’d rather have no idea how the story ends cause I’m sure this is going to be a best seller when I’m done.

  352. 452 catheryn tajon May 17, 2011 at 3:44 am

The best blog ive read, so different with so many blogs out there . The best part for mw is when the father wanted to make amends with the daughter, but it was too late , the daughter could not force her self to forgive or at least get closer.

  353. 453 JuliusTio May 17, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Amazingly written.. Love the whole story…

  354. 454 Michelle June 2, 2011 at 6:12 am

Thank you for this. I read it in one sitting and am now sitting here feeling utterly haunted.

  355. 455 mek June 5, 2011 at 6:57 am

excellent story! I will definitely be adding Alice to my sims world, and will ensure that the rest of her life is happy.

  356. 456 Debra June 6, 2011 at 5:12 am

I read the whole thing start to finish tonight- great story! I don’t play but this almost made me want to!

  357. 457 jennxsomething June 8, 2011 at 4:57 am

i really wish i could have seen alice and Z fall in love. she looked so happy when they were together.

  358. 458 Siaarn June 11, 2011 at 5:55 am

I cried a little, that was amazing, I need to get the Sims 3 now.

  359. 459 MerdtheNerd June 11, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Omg. I read this with my phone and when I didn’t have wifi I read it off 3G when I had nothing I couldn’t move on to the next chapter I was mad!!! AHHHH. I read it for like 1and a half hours! It was worth it though! Please write Another!!

  360. 460 RaziyaRodriguez June 13, 2011 at 5:45 am

As soon as I get my computer working properly, I am going to start a Legacy with Alice as it’s founder. Starting out alone and poverty stricken to rise up to (hopefully) have a loving family, good job, and large house seems very fitting for this Sim.
This story affected me enough emotionally that I just had to share it with my girlfriend. Thanks for posting!

  361. 461 Beth June 14, 2011 at 11:34 am

I, too, just read your whole story. Excellent work! You’ve certainly inspired quite the following!

  362. 462 Kriskty June 19, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Oh my gosh. Is it ridiculous that I just cried at the ending? 😮 It was really sad when Kev died. I thought him and Alice would patch things up in the end. 😦 This was an amazing story and I hope you write another or continue Alice’s story. Thank you!

  363. 463 Saibh June 20, 2011 at 5:30 am

Wow. I mean. Wow. You know, before this blog, I never quite got the people who crafted life stories. I generally never read them, and only skimmed through what they wrote. I never felt compelled to try to enact life itself.

I…guess…I get it now. I’m amazed what imagination and amazing programming can accomplish. Thanks for sharing this.

  364. 464 Anna E Shen June 23, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I am downloading the Sims 3 now. Right now. Because of this blog, I am suffering through the rage that is uTorrent. That is how powerful this story was.

I downloaded Alice and followed her on. She is now working up the Food career, on her way to being a chef. In her free time she paints, and fishes. I am trying to get her to save up enough to buy a house, before I make her meet someone and marry 🙂 Loved this blog!

This was one fantastic tale. Being a Sim writer myself, I am impressed, really, really impressed. Thank you for sharing this amazing piece with us. Excellent, just excellent.

Wow, this was one of the most touching and amusing video game stories I have ever experienced. Thank you for all the work you must have put into it (and the awareness you’ve helped raise for all those charities!) I hope your education or career is going well, I’d love to play a game you help design one day!

I liked your sims3 story very much!
Inspires me to create one as well.
And, I’ve put a link to your story on our sims3 story telling group on facebook.
    Great work!

    I get sad just thinking about this story D;

🙂 This is one of the best Sims blogs iv’e seen! I really hoped you would continue with Alice alone, and that she would hopefully fall in love with someone and have kids, but alas, lol. 🙂 Props for great pictures also!

Yes, I have been homeless in my life, more than once, and rather chronic. All I had was my laptop, a little shed behind an abandoned building, and free wifi at the Starbucks where I got hot water for free, and made soup for pretty much every meal. That puny laptop also had Sims on it, and of course, I downloaded Alice & Kev. I also built a homeless shelter of a different sort, and put Alice & Kev along with my self-Sim and others I’ve met along the way. 3 versions of it, original, expansion, store items/ mods. There will be a #4 soon, Barnacle Bay version.

    http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=3842562
    and a video:

Myself and my friends were upset by being told you must be a Christian to get into a homeless shelter. Or a single mom, abused woman, drug addict, addiction issues, mentally ill, suicidal, on Medicaid, and so on. I once saw a Jewish couple with kids get rejected because they would not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This lot is my response to such things.

@SciffyCirco just be careful you don’t paint every country by the same brush

    • 474 SciffyCirco September 2, 2011 at 11:02 am

No, I’ve visted Toronto a number of times over a 3 year period, seen just as many homeless and poor people there as I did in Chicago. I’ve lived in Phoenix 20 years ago, where they have entire parks filled with tents of homeless people. I would hope that other countries would be different.

Obviously, the groups I have encountered seem to be rather poor representatives of their religions, and charity, being very selective about who they help, and not based on need. It’s not unheard of to find wonderful groups and religions and charities out there, but it seems to be a rare occurrence where I have been.

Meanwhile, been a while since I looked at this thread, but I never forgot Alice and Kev. Still playing different versions of them. Got 2 different stories up here.

I’ve also got a number of low cost lots on the Sims Exchange, more than one of them being homeless shelters, or abandoned buildings where my Sims have decided to squat for a while. Some of them are based on real places I’ve stayed, and I didn’t mention I “lived” there for any amount of time.

      http://www.thesims3.com/mypage/SciffyCirco

In real life, I am STILL homeless with a laptop, still struggling with daily life, waiting on disability, housing, and more. Average wait time for housing is 6-11 months in Chicago, and I’ve been waiting over a year.

  374. 475 Space Rocket August 20, 2011 at 4:42 am

You are such an amazing storyteller. The story really got to me, so I tried the homeless challenge on my own. Because it’s such a lifelike situation, I thought of my two characters as real people. And that meant when the teenage daughter died of starvation, I was devastated.

  375. 476 zimmya August 25, 2011 at 8:09 pm

I’ve read the whole tale over a day and it is heart breaking to think that people could have lives like Alice and Kev. RIP Kev, and I feel so sorry for Alice! She even has the same name as me! I hope that one day there will be no homeless people, but there always will…

  376. 477 ivedelafuente August 26, 2011 at 7:59 am

This is amazing. I have so much respect for the writer and for Alice, the character. Kudos!

You are a marvelous storyteller providing wonderdul inaights to Kev and Alice’s tragic story. I am going to download Alice…I love the funny moments…like the officer with the wrench…lol. Please write another story….you have true talent.

  382. 483 Keen September 4, 2011 at 1:53 am

Just downloaded and tried out this “family” in the new town of Hidden Springs. With the new generations updates etc the first thing alice did was hop on a park bench and pretend she was driving. Almost heartbreaking to watch the little homeless girl pretend like she has something.

    A+

    This was so sad… I loved it. ;_;

  384. 485 twinklestar25 October 1, 2011 at 10:02 pm

I love this story. I must admit I was hoping that it would end with Alice finally living in a home; however, I loved the way it ended. It showsthat even though Alice didn’t get the house, cars and wealth, there is hope for her. I think I’m going to try her out.

  385. 486 antiavenger November 14, 2011 at 4:18 am

This was a GREAT story! There was a lot more here than I could’ve imagined, even from a Sims game. And the messaging it sends (and reminds you of) almost left me in tears at times (especially when Alice was breaking down). Thanks a lot for posting it!

    One word : Wow.

  394. 495 Jen October 23, 2012 at 3:04 am

I wanted to share this, even if nobody is checking this anymore:

I should have been asleep an hour ago, but wanted to read a funny sims story briefly, and I -never- read stuff like that. Then I found this in a blog. I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by something like this.

You have incredible writing talent and the pictures made this. I laughed so much, my heart was breaking, and I could feel the odd jealousy for Zed and his girlfriend. I pitied the crazy dad so much.

I think if anyone who ever worked on this project read this, they would see their efforts have lasting impact. I almost feel like this is the real way to play the game now.

Thanks for taking the time to spin this witty, lovely, bittersweet and elegant tale for anyone who would be open to really hearing it. Really… Thank you :’)

Just finished reading Alice and Kevs story with my girlfriend. She loves the sims but thought this would be silly. She was having a busy day but I insisted on reading her a few panels. All of a sudden it turned into a game of “just one more page”, we read it from beginning to end.
I want to know why Kev was looking after Alice and hadn’t given her up years ago. Did Kev’s wife die in childbirth, sending Kev mad with grief and unable to cope with life but saddled with a child that constantly reminded him of what he’d lost? Did he see her in Alice and so wasn’t able to let go?
For some reason my favorite bit in the story was when Kev went on his journey and right in the middle stops to shout at some rocks.
and yes, I cried a little when Alice gave her first paycheck to charity.
The story was astounding and touching. Both of us kept looking at each other with exasperation and kept saying “but its just a game!” how the hell did it make us care for those 2 so much?
the screen caps were amazing, the writing was excellent. 10 thumbs up from me.

  396. 497 Sciffy Circo January 23, 2013 at 3:54 am

When I got 7 emails in a row yesterday, I thought for sure the page had a spammer. What a joy to find people are still finding this blog and enjoying the story! I’ve been homeless myself in life, so I keep using my self-Sim and meeting the characters from here at the homeless shelters I built for them. I just can’t stop playing these characters. I was wondering which new downloaded world I might play tonight, and which characters. It might be time to see how Alice & Kev fare with the change of the Seasons! Or maybe a Supernatural potion could help them out. Certainly a consignment store! I do have mods, for various after-school activities, so I’d love to see if Alice can get a decent childhood out of it. I suppose I could take Zedadias to Create A Sim, make him younger, and have them go to high school together!

Wow, what a great story! I was really amazed and touched by the saga of Alice and Kev. It’s astounding how real these Sims were in their actions and emotions. Your storytelling was superb, and really brought these characters to life. Thank you for sharing! I’m now considering making my own homeless Sims to see how their lives play out. 🙂

This blog is old, and I remember reading some of it back in 2009. Unfortunately you hadn’t finished the story back then, and I forgot about it. Until I saw it mentioned on a forum, and I remember enjoying and being tocuhed by what little I had read of it. Now it’s 2015, and I read the whole thing in one go. For such a short novel about two game characters, it brought me to tears and filled me with joy. Your way of writing is very touching, and this sims blog was something else.
I will download Alice, and work on building a life for her. Maybe even build a few healthy relationships gradually, after years of abuse. Maybe even fall in love with someone as caring as herself.
Thank you for sharing Alice and Kev’s story, I won’t forget them this time.

  405. 506 Aieou July 10, 2015 at 1:00 am

This was simultaneously the funniest and saddest thing I’ve ever read. I don’t even know how you did it.

Damn man… 7 years on and and this little experiment is still affecting newcomers like me. I’m 35 years old and I’m not ashamed to admit I shed tears – quite a few actually. An emotional roller-coaster that I believe was only enhanced by the afterglow of the considerable quantity of psychedelic amphetamines that faithfully accompanied me on the journey.

I have no doubt you earned that degree in game design. I hope you’re putting it to good use. I would love to see the output from the mind that created this bizarre dystopian experiment in pushing artificial life to its very breaking point, prompting emergent behaviours that I suspect surprised you as much as they did me.

I’ve already made a donation to the Salvation Army and my local homeless shelter. You’re to thank for that. The efforts you made to raise awareness and aid your local shelters were admirable and inspiring examples.

Amazing in so many ways. You give me renewed faith in my fellow man when I’d largely written off our species as a blight on this Earth that would only be rectified by our rapidly approaching extinction. Alas, at this stage that extinction is a foregone conclusion; we simply can’t be trusted with this planet and it’s only logical that it will purge us as it does all invasive and destructive species that threaten it’s carefully balanced processes. But the world will continue to turn, life will continue to thrive and hopefully mother nature will do a better job at subsequent revisions of our deeply flawed and inherently self-destructive species. Until then, it’s nice to be reminded that my misanthropic outlook is a generalisation and doesn’t mean that there aren’t individual acts of selfless kindness and generosity occurring each and every day, somewhere out there.

    Love and peace my friend.

(This is so many years late, but) THANK YOU so much for this beautiful story.

I’ve never even played the Sims, but I stumbled across a reference to “Alice and Kev” while reading a comment thread on Kotaku and was immediately intrigued.

Came here yesterday, checked it out, finished the story this morning. I’m nearly in tears, but hopeful.

I’m lucky enough to have never been homeless because I have two loving, still-living parents. But I have been depressed and mostly unemployed for the last 8 years, so I really related to Alice’s pain, loneliness, and risk of despair.

I could very easily become homeless if something ever happened to my parents (and something WILL happen to them — they’re getting old), so this story has inspired me to “get my sh*t together” and work to put myself in a position of stability where hopefully, I can one day do things to help out people far less fortunate than me who don’t have homes to which they can always safely go to sleep at night.

Enough about me. This entire story was BRILLIANTLY written. Perfect capture of the screenshots. I can only imagine the amount of time and discipline that was put toward creating this story.

7 years later, thank you again, roBurky, for this beautiful and inspirational story. (And the best way I can thank you, I think, is to aspire to become a little more like Alice, so that one day I can maybe drop that donation to charity in the mailbox.)
